Jennings began singing at a young age in a Toledo church choir. He later joined a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and Jennings rediscovered music and started a music program at an Ohio prison where he was serving a ten-year sentence on an arson-related charge. He has cited Erykah Badu's 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Showtime In Harlem at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is Love. To further pursue his career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly's concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called "Thank God for the NAACP", and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14. He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn't see much sucess until after the album was released. The album featured his hit single "Must Be Nice". Jennings' second album The Phoenix will be released in August 2006. The first single, "S.E.X.", feautures Jennings' protégé, singer LaLa Brown.
Let's Stay Together

We gon' put some people back together today, ha
La la la la la la la la la
Somebody gon' thank me after this song, man
La la la la la la la
Matter of fact, I'm a thank me right now
La la la la la la la, oh
I'm to blame
And I can't sympathize with your pain
If I could I'd make it go away
But I can't
So I concentrate on more realistic things
Like questioning
Is there anything here worth salvaging?
[Bridge]
Is it over?
How do we go about deciding?
Do we add up all the good times then divide them
By how many times we hurt each other
Or do we just ignore the numbers and vow right now to never ever take asunder?
[Chorus]
Let's stay together
Can we agree to just disagree?
Let's stay together
Don't do it for the kids, do it for me
Let's stay together
I'm tired of all this making up and breaking up
Let's stay together (together)
Let's stay together, yeah
Girl, I can't justify what I've done
Ain't got no reasons why, not even one
I pray to God what seems like every morning for the sun
To shine on us just one more time
And let me hold you in my arms, and we'd just cry
[Bridge]
[Chorus]
(Aight' you wanna make me say it, you wanna make me say it)
See, if you leave
(I would not die physically)
But emotionally
(Might as well bury me)
For I can't be the man I should have been
Before all of this happened
But if we hold on
(And ask God for direction)
Where we went wrong
(We can make the correction if we)
Just stay strong
All of our up and downs
Fully come around
And there will be nothing that can shake us
Nothing that can break us
We will stay together
[Chorus]
(Put your hands together, man)
This is where it all comes to a head at
Are all these years worth nothing?
Is it over?
You don't wanna be with him
He don't wanna be with you
Hell, you done made some mistakes too
He done made some mistakes
You done made some mistakes before, man
Work it out, man
And you dudes out there
Anybody can be slick at talking
Anybody can be slick at talking, man
Try to be slick at listening, man
Your work is at home
It ain't in the streets, it's at home
So get there, get there
And stay there
The lyrics to Lyfe Jennings's song Interlude to Let's Stay Together deal with the aftermath of a turbulent relationship. The singer admits fault and apologizes to his partner. He acknowledges the pain he caused but seems resigned to the fact that he cannot undo it. He questions if the relationship is salvageable and wonders if there are enough fond memories to offset the pain they've inflicted upon each other.
While there is a level of desperation in the singer's explanations, he also takes responsibility for his actions and seems genuinely remorseful. He acknowledges that they have made mistakes but encourages his partner to work through them and stay together. The last lines of the song encourage men to be better listeners and to focus on their relationships at home rather than seeking validation elsewhere.
This song is a beautiful meditation on the complexities of romantic relationships. It unabashedly acknowledges the pain, fault, and heartache that comes with loving someone, but it also celebrates the beauty of commitment and forgiveness.

Say it again...
so many ain't listening...
and too many done forgot...
for better AND for worse...
until death do we part...
it's more than just some catch phrase for marriage...
it's a vow we make with The Most High,...
FOR our spouse...
and one that he holds us to for life... 🕊
