Jennings began singing at a young age in a Toledo church choir. He later joined a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and Jennings rediscovered music and started a music program at an Ohio prison where he was serving a ten-year sentence on an arson-related charge. He has cited Erykah Badu's 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Harlem at the Showtime at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is Love. To further pursue his career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly's concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called "Thank God for the NAACP", and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14. He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn't see much sucess until after the album was released. The album featured his hit single "Must Be Nice". Jennings' second album The Phoenix was released in August 2006. The first single, "S.E.X.", feautures Jennings' protΓ©gΓ©, singer LaLa Brown.

Aye yo you
Still up at the hood spots
Still no security, still gotta swaga like my pops
Still water run deep when that coke is cheap
But when that price go south, get your surf boards out
Still gotta lil' pimp in me from my past
Still got some lil' cousins that will beat yo ass
So how the hell do I gotta call the cops up
[Verse 1]
Shorty you're so amazing, your body's bangin'
Conversation so stimulating, my heart is racing
(I just want to know if we can get 2gether sometime)
And you know what I'm saying
Ya bodies toned up look at those thick thighs
Grandmama must have been feeding you right
(Shake it to the left momma shake it to the right momma)
[Chorus]
Somebody call the cops up
Lil momma done stole my heart
She's making me fall in love
She's not gonna give it up
Somebody call the cops up
Somebody call 911
Tell'em I've been shot through the heart
I've fallen and I can't get up
Somebody call the cops up
[Verse 2]
Baby the ladies starring... Fellas say hi
Champaign bottles get to poppin' when u walk by
The mood is crazy "pimpin is is what pimpin' does"
You know what I'm sayin', it's two o'clock and the club is jumpin'
All eyes on you they ain't here 4 nothing
(Shake it to the left momma, shake it to the right momma)
[Chorus]
Cops up cops up
Somebody call the cops up
[Bridge]
So won't cha walk like a model
Walk like a model
Walk like a model
Walk it out
So won't cha walk like a model
Walk like a model
Walk like a model
Walk it out
Now freeze
And drop
Drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot
Now freeze
And drop
Drop it like it's hot, drop it like it's hot
[Chorus]
Cops up, cops up
Cops up, cops up, cops up
Somebody call the cops up
Cops up, cops up
Cops up, cops up
The song "Cops Up" by Lyfe Jennings is about falling in love with a woman at a club or party. The singer is infatuated with the woman's body and personality and wants to pursue a romantic relationship. Despite his feelings, he is hesitant to make a move, and instead, he compares himself to his father and the people in his neighborhood. He points out that he is still a little bit of a pimp from his past and is respected by his cousins. The chorus repeats the phrase "Somebody call the cops up," which can be interpreted as a metaphor for being overwhelmed by love and needing help because the singer is "shot through the heart" and has "fallen and can't get up."
