Jennings began singing at a young age in a Toledo church choir. He later joined a group called The Dotsons with two of his cousins and his older brother, Jay. The group separated in the early 1990s, and Jennings rediscovered music and started a music program at an Ohio prison where he was serving a ten-year sentence on an arson-related charge. He has cited Erykah Badu's 1997 album Baduizm as one of the reasons for his rediscovery. Jennings was released from prison in December 2002 and started to pursue a solo career in music. In January 2003, he performed in Harlem at the Showtime at The Apollo. The same year, he also independently released his first EP, What Is Love. To further pursue his career, Jennings moved to New York City where he performed at rapper Nelly's concert at Radio City Music Hall, at an NAACP convention where he performed an original song called "Thank God for the NAACP", and at the Cafeteria in Chelsea, Manhattan during the blackout on August 14. He signed with Columbia Records and released his debut album Lyfe 268-192 (268-192 was his inmate number) in August 2004. His first single was Stick Up Kid, which didn't see much sucess until after the album was released. The album featured his hit single "Must Be Nice". Jennings' second album The Phoenix was released in August 2006. The first single, "S.E.X.", feautures Jennings' protégé, singer LaLa Brown.

She just wanna be...
She just wanna be famous
Lyfe Jennings in the building
I know what you want
She just wanna be...
I know what you like
Let's get it
Tonight we're young
Boy she knows just who she is
And she what she wants
She has expensive taste
And she can spot a broke ass...
From a mile away
She dreams and she just wants
To release a little pressure
When your day's stressful
She gets all the attention
And it's no wonder why she's at the club every single weekend
[Chorus]
She just wanna be famous for one night
She wanna feel like she's made it once in her life
She loves the look on their faces when they watch her wind
She just wanna be famous for one night
She seems naive
But don't let that young face you,
She knows exactly
Why she's in the VIP
And it's not because what's in her heart
And she has in those jeans
She plays her part
And pretend she's really interested when you flirt with her
But if they only knew
She's attracted to the attention and not to you
[Chorus]
She just wanna be famous for one night
She wanna feel like she's made it once in her life
She loves the look on their faces when they watch her wind
She just wanna be famous for one night
Walks in the hallway, C-Thru blouse
iPhone 4 with the case iced out
Fresh off the porch with a blunt in her mouth
She from up north but her man down south
20 on her wrist, no she didn't buy that
But you get this when yo ass that fat
Forget about the DJ, she can entertain us
Youngster put me on, I'mma make that name as famous
[Chorus]
She just wanna be famous for one night
She wanna feel like she's made it once in her life
She loves the look on their faces when they watch her wind
She just wanna be famous for one night
In "Famous" by Lyfe Jennings, he speaks of a young woman who just wants to be famous, even if it's only for one night. She's depicted as someone with expensive taste who frequents the club scene. While she might come across as naive, she knows exactly what she's doing and why she's in the VIP section. She's in search of the attention that comes with fame rather than genuine human connection. She's not interested in the people who approach her, but rather the power that comes with being the center of attention.
The song speaks to the yearning that some people have for fame at any cost. The lyrics suggest that this woman is more concerned with the way she is perceived by others than with building meaningful relationships or having a true sense of self-worth. She's willing to play a role in order to feel validated and important for even just one night. The song is a commentary on the perils of fame and how it can lead people to prioritize things that aren't truly fulfilling.
