Cowboy Man
Lyle Lovett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She wore glass slippers
She held her head up high
She had that sparkle at her feet
And that twinkle in her eye

She smiled at me
And as I wondered why
She said I'm looking for a cowboy
To take me for a ride

And he can rope me on the prairie
And he can ride me on the plain
And I will be his Cinderella
If he'll be my cowboy man

She said I've got a forty-gallon stetson hat
With a thirty eight-foot brim
We could dance around the outside baby
'Til we both fall in

And you can rope me on the prairie
And you can ride me on the plain
And I will be your Cinderella
If you'll be my cowboy man

Now I ain't never been no cowboy
But heaven knows I try
Cause I'll be riding tall in my saddle
With that Cinderella by my side

And I can rope her on the prairie
And I can ride her on the plain

And she will be me my Cinderella
If I'll be her cowboy man

Overall Meaning

The song Cowboy Man by Lyle Lovett is a playful and romantic ode to the cowboy way of life. The lyrics describe a chance encounter with a woman who is looking for a cowboy to take her for a ride. She is dressed up in glass slippers and has a sparkle in her eye that catches the attention of the singer. The woman invites the singer to dance and play with her, and imagines a future together where they ride the prairies and plains together as cowboy and Cinderella.

The singer admits that he's never been a cowboy, but he's willing to try for the sake of this woman. The song paints a picture of a carefree and whimsical romance, where anything is possible if you have the imagination and the desire. One of the best. Love this guy. Saw him a couple of times. Was fantastic. The first song...first set was a Clifford Brown jazz tune that the band jammed out to. Wow!! The perfect song to get the show rolling.

I saw Lyle Lovett on an episode of Blue Bloods playing a Texas Ranger who went to New York to help catch a fugitive. That was the first and only time I saw him until today I saw a picture of him and John Hiatt together and I kept thinking he looked familiar so I did a Google search and found out he was a singer and actor. He's pretty good.
