Rosie
Lyle Lovett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was standing at the load-in
When the trucks rolled up
She was sniffing all around
Like a half grown female pup
She wasn't hard to talk to
Looked like she had nowhere to go
So I gave her my pass
So she could get in and see the show
Well I sat her down right next to me
And I got her a beer
While I mixed that sound on the stage
So the band could hear
The more I watched her watch them play
The less I thought of to say
And when they walked off stage
The drummer swept that girl away
But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight, Rosie
Well I guess I might have known from the start
She'd come for a star
Might have told my imagination not to run too far
Of all the times that I've been burned
By now you'd think I'd have learned
That it's who you look like
Not who you are
(You all keep that in mind)
But Rosie you're all right -- you wear my ring
When you hold me tight -- Rosie that's my thing
When you turn out the light -- I've got to hand it to me
Looks like it's me and you again tonight, Rosie
Looks like it's me and you again tonight...
Looks like it's me and you again tonight, Rosie

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lyle Lovett's song "Rosie" tells the story of the singer meeting a young woman at a concert. She is standing outside as the trucks roll in, clearly curious and without a pass to enter. He offers her his pass and invites her to sit next to him as he mixes the sound for the band on stage. As he watches her watch the band, he finds himself at a loss for words. When the concert ends, the drummer takes her away, leaving the singer to reflect on his own past mistakes in chasing after women who appear to be someone they're not. Despite this, he finds solace in Rosie's presence, declaring that she wears his ring, and that when she holds him tight, that's all that matters.

The song speaks to the idea of not judging a book by its cover and the importance of being genuine. The singer recognizes his own past mistakes in being enamored with women who may not truly be who they appear to be, but he finds comfort and a sense of authenticity in Rosie. She may not be like the other women he's been with, but she's real and wears his ring. They may not have a future together, but for tonight, they have each other.
