What's Your Name
Lynard Skynard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, its eight o'clock in Boise, Idaho
I'll find my limo driver
Mister, take us to the show
I done made some plans for later on tonight
I'll find a little queen
And I know I can treat her right.

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl
Won't you do the same

Back at the hotel, lord we got such a mess
It seems that one of the crew
Had a go with one of the guests, oh yes
Well, the police said we can't drink in the bar, What a shame
Won't you come upstairs girl
And have a drink of champagne

What's your name, little girl
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl
For there ain't no shame

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl
Won't you do the same

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl
Won't you do the same

Nine o'clock the next day
And I'm ready to go
I got six hundred miles to ride
To do one more show, oh no
Can I get you a taxi home
It sure was grand
When I come back here next year
I wanna see you again

What was your name, little girl
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl
Well there ain't no shame

What was your name, little girl
What's your name?

Shootin' you straight, little girl
Won't you do the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd's song 'What's Your Name' describe a musician who is on tour and looking for some fun after his show. He's in Boise, Idaho, and he's looking for a little queen to spend the night with. He approaches her and asks for her name, but he also makes it clear that he's not looking for anything serious with her. He's just there for a good time, and he wants her to be honest and straightforward with him about what she wants from their encounter.

As the night progresses, the lyrics reveal that things have gotten a bit wild back at the hotel. One of the crew members has hooked up with one of the guests, and the police have arrived to shut down the party. But our protagonist isn't ready for the night to end, and he invites the girl he met earlier up to his room for some champagne. Once again, he asks for her name, emphasizing that he's not looking to play games or beat around the bush.

As the song comes to a close, the musician is already on his way to his next show, but he makes a promise to see the girl again when he comes back to Boise. Throughout the lyrics, there's a sense of urgency and inevitability to the encounters between the musician and the girl. They both know what they want, and they're not afraid to be upfront about it.

How i used to pull up on Long Beach police with my raiders jacket on. And my gun in my hand in the passenger sear just muggin em. With this song playing loudly. If they looked close enough they could see my mustasche dancing to this song while I was lookin at em. Mightve been in a beat up honda civic not a muscle car or cadillac. But atleast it delivered the message.

Yeah your shift is over you get to go home and drink a beer. But im still out and about in these streets. C you tommorow little girl. Its time for me to clock in in these streets 10 o clock at night👉

N to the other cops that was standing next to em that werent clocking out they knew what time it was.

@lollar

What's great is that virtually everything he sings about in this song happened verbatim to them in real life.

Another great song that I remember from the 1970s. I love this band, and this album. May Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkerson, and Billy Powell rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️🦅

All their songs were great. No other band can say that!
