Hair
Lynn Kellogg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We starve, look at one another short of breath
Walking proudly in our winter coats
Wearing smells from laboratories
Facing a dying nation of moving paper fantasy
Listening for the new told lies
With supreme visions of lonely tunes
Somewhere, inside something , there is a rush of greatness
Who knows what stands in front of our lives
I fashion my future on films in space
Silence tells me secretly ev'rything, ev'rything
Singing my space songs on a spiderweb star
"Life is around you and in you"
Answer for Timothy Leary, deary

Let the sun shine
Let The sunshine in
The sun shine in

Let the sun shine
Let The sunshine in
The sun shine in

Let the sun shine
Let The sunshine in
The sun shine in

Let the sun shine

Let The sunshine in
The sun shine in

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hair by Lynn Kellogg were written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and the music is composed by Galt MacDermot. The song was released in 1967 and became an anthem for the counterculture movement of the 1960s. The song reflects the social and political unrest of the time and the youth's desire for change.

The opening of the lyrics paints a picture of a society in distress with people struggling to survive, and the air is filled with the stench from chemicals produced in laboratories. The line “Facing a dying nation of moving paper fantasy” refers to the constant paperwork related to bureaucracy and how it is taking its toll on the nation. The next line “Listening for the new told lies with supreme visions of lonely tunes” expresses how the people are yearning for a new reality, but amidst the noise of the world, they don't know who to trust and feel quite isolated.

The next verse is the singer's (the singer) personal response to this situation. “I fashion my future on films in space, silence tells me secretly everything” implies that the singer is looking for inspiration beyond the current reality and is turning to science fiction movies for new ideas. The closing line of the verse “singing my space songs on a spiderweb star” confirms the singer's escape from the present and his or her search for a more fantastic, unlimited world. The chorus “Let the sun shine” is an invitation to the audience to join in the pursuit of happiness and to embrace the new era with positivity.

How can people be so heartless
How can people be so cruel
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who care about evil
And social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd?
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people be so heartless
You know I'm hung up on you
Easy to give in
Easy to help out

And especially people
Who care about strangers
Who say they care about social injustice
Do you only
Care about the bleeding crowd
How about a needing friend?
I need a friend

How can people have no feelings
How can they ignore their friends
Easy to be hard
Easy to be cold
Easy to be proud
Easy to say no

Nearly 55 years after first hearing it, the soundtrack of HAIR remains in my regular rotation. This is one of the sweetest, yet saddest songs of the show, and is so feelingly rendered by this passionate young singer.
RIP, Lynn Kellogg.

Twilight Blue

Lynn Kellogg was so beautiful and talented. What a voice!

I knew Lynn Kellogg at UWM in our freshman year. She was one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen...before or since...and this was before I had ever heard her sing. Unbelievable combination. Then I just learned a few days ago that she tragically died from the WuFlu last November and I'm heart-broken. Wish I could find her sister Edie, who was equally talented and gorgeous, to tell her how sorry I am.

John Simpers

Ede lives in Ukiah, CA and her last name is Morris. Lynn's husband John.

@John Simpers Thank you so much for your reply....and let me say again to you and Ede how very, very sorry I am to learn about Lynn. I often thought of trying to contact her while she was in San Diego as I was frequently there, years ago, since my parents lived in Solana Beach. I'll never forget her.....

@Primebaker I just had a LIVE CHRISTMAS CONCERT she did digitally remastered and a song entitled "Kindred Spirit" which she said was our song. She was my life and the only reason I care to continue is to keep her music going.I almost forgot about hundreds of songs I recorded for her as her sound engineer when she practiced for live performances. It is TREASURE. John

@John Simpers sorry for your loss, Mr. Simpers.

I knew Lynn at UW Madison '64-65, her senior year and my freshman year. Such vitality and vivacity. I am deeply saddened by her passing.

Nice. But like nearly everything they touched, 3DN have THE definitive version. Negron put this song across with incredible emotion.
