In 1979 Lynne Hamilton was given the opportunity, having been a popstar in England with The Caravelles, to sing a song titled - On The Inside - which launched her into the spotlight once again. She was chosen as the 'unknown' singer, in Australia, to record the theme tune for a new soap opera set at a women's prison: Prisoner. The song, On the Inside was written by Allan Caswell and was released as a single in Australia. It reached number one in the singles chart and sold in excess of 80,000 copies. Lynne appeared on many T.V shows, radio programmes and her song hit the heart of many Australians, particularly women, and the hit song became an Australian favourite. She was a star again. Her schedule again increased and many tours within Australia was the result.
Ten years after this initial success the song was issued in the UK for the first time. To coincide with the series' first broadcast on UK television the single was rush-released and became a massive overnight hit, reaching number 3 in the UK charts in 1989. Lynne Hamilton then appeared on 'Top of the Pops' and similar TV programmes throughout the UK, singing her Hit Song 'On the Inside' A worldwide search had been initiated (in England) to find the 'lost' singer, because of the TV theme song's success in England, and eventually Hamilton was located in her new home in Queensland, Australia.
In 1988 The song was covered by Andy Paul in Reggae, it was a great success, throughout Europe.
Although Lynne has recorded a number of albums and other songs, she will be forever associated with her only hit single - 'On The Inside'. He used to give me roses,
I wish he could again;
But that was on the outside,
And things were different then.
We'd built our world together,
With a love so clear and strong;
Where did i go wrong?
*******************
CHORUS
On the inside the sun still shines,
And the rain falls down;
But the sun and rain are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.
*******************
VERSE 2
Last night i dreamed we were together,
Sharing all the love we've known;
Til i had to face the nightmare,
Of waking up alone.
*******************
CHORUS
On the inside the sun still shines,
And the rain falls down;
But the sun and rain are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.
On the inside the roses grow;
They don't mind the stoney ground;
But the roses here are prisoners too,
When morning comes around.
*******************
He used to give me roses,
I wish he could again;
But that was on the outside,
An things were different then.
The lyrics of Lynne Hamilton's song "On the Inside" depict the emotional turmoil of a woman who has lost her love and is struggling to cope with the aftermath of the relationship. In the first verse, she reminisces about the good times they shared when they were together, and how he used to give her roses, but now things have changed, and she cannot have those moments again. Despite building a strong and clear love, she ponders where she might have gone wrong. The chorus expresses the metaphor that even though the sun still shines and the rain still falls, they are prisoners too when morning comes around, signifying that though life goes on, she feels trapped in her emotions and unable to move on.
In the second verse, she dreams about being with her love once again, and experiencing the love they once shared. However, the dream ends abruptly, and she realizes the nightmare of waking up alone. The chorus is repeated, with the addition of "On the inside the roses grow; They don't mind the stoney ground; But the roses here are prisoners too when morning comes around," highlighting the hope and growth that can occur even in difficult circumstances, but acknowledging that those moments of growth and hope still feel fleeting and trapped.
In conclusion, the lyrics of "On the Inside" capture the complexity of emotions one can feel after the breakdown of a relationship. It talks about the hope, despair, and struggles that come with trying to move on and find happiness again.

Our current relationship is no longer what it once was.
We'd built our world together,
We had created a life that felt perfect.
With a love so clear and strong;
Our love was once palpable and real.
But that was on the outside.
Our outward appearance betrayed our internal struggles.
Where did I go wrong?
I'm not sure how we ended up here, in this place of disconnect.
Last night I dreamed we were together,
In my subconscious mind, I still long for our love to be rekindled.
Sharing all the love we've known;
Remembering the passion and tenderness we once shared.
Til I had to face the nightmare,
But eventually coming back to reality and facing the pain of our current situation.

On the inside the sun still shines,
Despite external appearances, I still hold on to hope that our love can be rekindled.
And the rain falls down;
But I also acknowledge the difficulties and pain that come with that hope.
But the sun and rain are prisoners too,
Even hope is not free from the internal struggle and turmoil that define our relationship.
When morning comes around.
Each new day brings more of the same, and the hope fades once more.
On the inside the roses grow;
The potential for love still exists within me.
They don't mind the stoney ground;
Even in difficult circumstances, love can still blossom.
But the roses here are prisoners too,
But even this love is trapped within the larger context of our relationship.
When morning comes around.
And every day, I am faced with the harsh reality of our disconnection.

Oh my the memories. I was born in 81 so Prisoner Cell Block H was very popular in the UK. I used to watch it with my mum but at the end when your song came on, I used to have to go up to bed. I used to be so scared, I don't know if it was because the song was so beautiful and i felt overwhelmed❤

My 20 month old daughter is obsessed with this song. We are watching the entire original Prisoner: Cell Block H series and every time it comes on, she stops whatever she is doing and stares at the screen wistfully… it’s so cute.

One of the best themes ever written. Makes me think of my late mum, she loved watching Prisoner.

Same here. My mum used to watch prisoner and man she hated Bee! I was a young kid and everytime I heard this song I felt emotional! Now it reminds me of my mum. Over 15 years ago she passed away! ❤
