What's Your Name
Lynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, its eight o'clock in Boise, Idaho
I'll find my limo driver
Mister, take us to the show
I done made some plans for later on tonight
I'll find a little queen
And I know I can treat her right

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same?

Back at the hotel
Lord we got such a mess
It seems that one of the crew
Had a go with one of the guests, oh yes
Well, the police said we can't drink in the bar, what a shame
Won't you come upstairs girl
And have a drink of champagne

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
For there ain't no shame

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same? Awh yeah

What's your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same?

Nine o'clock the next day
And I'm ready to go
I got six hundred miles to ride
To do one more show, oh no
Can I get you a taxi home
It sure was grand
When I come back here next year
I want to see you again

What was your name, little girl?
What's your name?
Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Well there ain't no shame
What was your name, little girl?
What's your name?

Shootin' you straight, little girl?
Won't you do the same? Woo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "What's Your Name" are about a rock star looking for a woman to spend the night with after his concert. The song takes place in Boise, Idaho, where the singer is trying to find a woman to spend the night with. He asks her name and shoots straight with her, promising to treat her right. Later on, the lyrics reveal that one of the crew had a one-night stand with one of the guests, causing a mess back at the hotel. The police come and tell them they can no longer drink in the bar, but the singer invites the woman upstairs for some champagne. The next day, the singer has to leave for another show, but he asks for the woman's name so that he can see her again when he returns next year.

The song is a classic example of rock and roll's reckless and hedonistic lifestyle in the 1970s. The singer is unapologetic about his intentions, but he still wants to treat the woman with respect. The lyrics show a duality in the singer's character, with him being wild and crazy on stage, but still searching for love and companionship off-stage.

How i used to pull up on Long Beach police with my raiders jacket on. And my gun in my hand in the passenger sear just muggin em. With this song playing loudly. If they looked close enough they could see my mustasche dancing to this song while I was lookin at em. Mightve been in a beat up honda civic not a muscle car or cadillac. But atleast it delivered the message.

Yeah your shift is over you get to go home and drink a beer. But im still out and about in these streets. C you tommorow little girl. Its time for me to clock in in these streets 10 o clock at night👉

N to the other cops that was standing next to em that werent clocking out they knew what time it was.

What's great is that virtually everything he sings about in this song happened verbatim to them in real life.

Another great song that I remember from the 1970s. I love this band, and this album. May Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkerson, and Billy Powell rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️🦅
