Cry For The Bad Man
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well he walks so tall to be so small
Never met a man who's stranger
He lives his life for a dollar sign
And to deal with him is dangerous
He knocked me down but I'm on my feet
Now I'm so much wiser
I'd rather quit and go back home
Than to deal with the money miser
Let's cry for this bad man
I sing a song for the bad man

Well, you treat me right baby, I'll treat you right
That's the way it's supposed to be
I put my faith down in my friend
And he almost put an end to me
Well I work seven days a week
Eight when I am able
When you take money from me you take food from my mama's table
Let's cry for this bad man
I wrote a song for the bad man

Oh baby you know who you are

Let's cry for this bad man
I wrote a song for the bad man way down in Georgia

Well, you treat me right baby, I'll treat you right
That's the way it's supposed to be
I put my faith down in my friend
And he almost put an end to me
Well, when you take my money baby when you hurt my family
I go walkin' through the swamps without no shoes
Step on a snake it scares you
Let's cry for this bad man
I wrote a song for the bad man br>oh let's cry for this bad man
I wrote a song for the bad man

Oh baby straight to you
He's so bad, so bad

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Cry For The Bad Man" tell a story of a man who is described as a dangerous, money-minded character that the singer warns against. The first verse paints him as a small man who values nothing more than money, willing to hurt others to get what he wants. The singer claims to have been knocked down by this man, but has learned from the experience and would rather quit and go back home than to deal with him. The chorus is a call to action, as the singer asks everyone to cry for the bad man, highlighting the harm he causes. The second verse is more personal, as the singer had put his faith in a friend who almost killed him, taking money from him that could have provided for his family.

Overall, the song is a warning against the dangers of greed and the harm it can cause to others. The tone of the song is melancholic, with the cry for the bad man highlighting the damage that he causes. The personal nature of the verse also adds to the emotional depth of the song.

Not only is the song great, the band but also the genre. Fortunate to come up in an era with music that had much heart, soul, talent and meaning. My hope is that some of the younger generation discovers this.

I'm glad to let you know that there are those of us that truly enjoy and appreciate this type of music. I haven't yet met others my age who share my same passion for hard rock and tasty licks, but I know that they are out there somewhere. This is my first time listening to anything other than Free Bird from Lynyrd btw, and I am loving it!!!!! This song scratches the same itch I get from Hendrix, looking forward to discovering more music like this. Have a good day!

To me, Lynyrd Skynyrd NEVER EVER made a bad song. Actually most of their songs were The Best Southern Rock. And I love all them Southern boys. From Duane Allman to The Caldwell Bros to Charlie Daniels. But Lynyrd Skynyrd will always hold a special place in my heart. I saw them everytime they came to Birmingham Alabama. RIP Boys. All of you
