Gotta Go
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't care who you are baby
Don't care about all the friends that you know
And why you chose me
Lord, sweet mama don't want to know
Can't tie me down baby
Don't bring me down
Chains can't hold me, I gotta go
I don't want your money baby
Don't care for your fancy clothes
And how you people live together
I say lord in heaven only knows

Can't tie me down people
Don't bring me down
Oh the man can't stop me, I gotta go
Gonna hit that road
Buy me some coke

You can take all your charm baby
Yea sweet daddy knows where it goes
Yes it does
You can tell your big sister thanks a lot for the hole

Can't tie me down baby
Don't bring me down
Chains can't hold me, I gotta go

Gonna hit that road
I gotta go, don't hold me baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gotta Go" convey the message of the singer's desire for freedom and a life on the road, free from the constraints of society and relationships. The song begins with the singer asserting that they do not care who the woman is or who her friends are, or even why she chose him. He simply does not want to be tied down and chained to a relationship. The singer then goes on to express his disdain for material possessions, including money and fancy clothes. He sees the world as a place that is meant to be explored and experienced, not bogged down by people living standard lives.

The chorus repeats the mantra "can't tie me down, don't bring me down" while exclaiming that even the strongest chains cannot hold the singer back, as he must go hit the road and live free. The final verse takes a more personal tone, where the singer tells the woman that her charm means nothing to him and that she can thank her sister for the "hole" that the singer has left behind. The song ends by repeating the desire to hit the road and the plea for the woman not to hold the singer back.

Amazing how great this track is, yet it didn't make it to any of their official albums. Love how some of the solos fade up, almost like it's an outtake, but the playing is flawless. Great song, too.

"...and how you people live together, heaven only knows". Used to associate this song with "I'm a Country Boy". Similar vibe, though this fits more with the "sing for just a minute and then it's all guitars for 3 minutes" Skynyrd song format. The T-for-Texas live recording also appeared on this mid-priced cassette. Preferred this to "I've been your fool" of the 2 unreleased songs

Ed White

@David Gregory THAT was Allen's ONLY slide recording-it was ALL him.
