I Know a Little
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yes sir

Well the bigger the city, well the brighter the lights
The bigger the dog, well the harder the bite
I don't know where you been last night
But I think mama, you ain't doin' right

Say I know a little
I know a little about it
I know a little
I know a little 'bout it
I know a little 'bout love
And baby I can guess the rest

Well now I don't read that daily news
'Cause it ain't hard to figure
Where people get the blues
They can't dig what they can't use
If they stick to themselves
They'd be much less abused

Say I know a little
Lord I do know a little about it
I know a little
I know a little 'bout it
I know a little 'bout love
Baby I can guess the rest
Play me a little, oh yeah
Yeah

Well if you want me to be your only man
Said listen up mama, teach you all I can
Do right baby, by your man
Don't worry mama, teach you all I can

Say I know a little
Lord I do know a little about it
I know a little
I know a little 'bout it
I know a little 'bout love
Baby I can guess the rest

Well I know a little 'bout love
Baby I want your best

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "I Know a Little" showcases the perspective of someone who has experienced the ups and downs of love and life. The beginning of the song sets the scene of the fast-paced and vibrant city life. The bigger the city, the more mesmerizing it is, with brighter lights and a tougher crowd. It's easy to get caught up in the glamour of the big cities, but the more significant the illusion, the more substantial the blow when one falls. The lyrics warn the woman in question that she's not doing things right, but the singer is not judgmental; he merely knows that love can be complicated.

The chorus of the song is its most well-known part. The singer confidently states that he knows a little bit about love and can guess the rest. The lyrics imply that he has seen it all, experienced enough to give advice but not too much to forgive human weakness. His lines convey the message that you can survive life's difficulties if you have seen enough and learned from it.

The second verse of the song points to the root cause of many people's dissatisfaction with life- they can't dig what they can't use. It's a reminder of the futility of chasing materialism and unfulfilling desires. The lyrics imply that people should stick to themselves and avoid abuse, whether from within or outside. They should concentrate on what is essential in life and cherish it.

Damn finally someone who recognizes who actually played this! Gary rossington actually said that when Steve came into the band him and Alan were burnt out and he breathed new life into the band imagine the music that Steve and Ronnie could have made together had they lived said Artimus Pyle. We have a song that is so good "You got that right" which is Steve and Ronnie singing together the only one before the plane crash.

Ed king said this was the hardest song for him to do, when the tribute 87' came around. He did a damn good job though. He could not get it right, but pretty damn close.
