I Never Dreamed
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My daddy told me always be strong son
Don't you ever cry
You find the pretty girls, and then you love them
And then you say goodbye
I never dreamed that you would leave me,
But now you're gone
I never dreamed that I would miss you
Woman won't you come back home

I never dreamed that you could hurt me
And leave me blue
I've had a thousand, maybe more
But never one like you
I never dreamed I could feel so empty
But now I'm down
I never dreamed that I would beg you
But woman I need you now

It seems to me, I took your love for granted
It feels to me, this time I was wrong, so wrong
Oh Lord, how I feel so lonely
I said woman, won't you come back home

I tried to do what my daddy taught me,
But I think he knew
Someday I would find
One woman like you
I never dreamed it could feel so good Lord,
That two could be one
I never knew about sweet love

So woman won't you come back home
Oh baby won't you come back home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "I Never Dreamed" revolve around the singer's heartbreak and yearning for his lost love. The song starts with the singer reminiscing about his father's advice to always be strong and not to cry, and to find pretty girls and then say goodbye. However, he never imagined that the girl he loved would leave him, and now he misses her deeply. He never realized that she could hurt him or leave him feeling so empty, and now he begs her to come back home. The singer hints at possibly taking her love for granted and now feels regretful for not realizing what he had until it was gone.

The song ends with the singer admitting that he never knew love could be so sweet until he met her, and now that she's gone, all he wants is for her to come back home again. The lyrics showcase the rollercoaster of emotions that come with being in love, the joy of finding someone special, and the heartbreak and pain that come with losing them.

Overall, "I Never Dreamed" is a poignant ballad that speaks to the universal theme of love and heartbreak. The song combines the band's trademark Southern rock sound with heartfelt lyrics to create an emotional listening experience for the audience.

Hey Skynyrd
Radio died with the nineties and how many of you Bluetooth your rhythms
Things would have been different if Ronnie Van Zant had of lived
The South and I'm digging into the waters of life
Why does perfection gotta be so hard people
No love
No love
Hey I'm angry and I'm disgusted
I would rather be free than be a package in a box
I've always fought against conformity and subjection
Even as a child I have had to fight for my freedom
It's pathetic
Carbon footprint and I get the crap
They price the water and they gonna be pricing for the air next
Don't think I am not taking chi ching on the house of David
Hey
My world my hell my game my house
Chi ching
I'm gonna pay them for the medical and the social security I have been alotted
I'm going to pay them back for every red cent and I am going to walk
I'm going to turn away from this institution from this slavery and oppression and the government that funds it
Hell it's not just the slavery it's conformity and subjection
The slavery
I don't like it and I don't have to be part of it
Like let me alone
I'm free
And I'm probably the only one that truly is free
And why is it when I hear the name Lucifer I get this funny feeling in my toes and in my seat that it's talking about me
Beast or no beast second just ain't good enough for me
Like they say just another Angel in the crowd
Just another brick in the wall
But yes why do they put perfection inside of a box
Why they charge me for the perfection that I represent
Cost
Hell clean up the trash under your own step before you complain about mine
Look like let it go
I'm free now
And now is all I got

I remember a group of us were sitting by a fire out in the middle of the woods listening to this album for the first time and when this song came on, everyone was quiet and just staring into the fire. The guitar playing was amazing! I miss that music and my friends 😢

One of the best albums in the mid 70’s; just imagine what could’ve been; Ronnie with 3 very powerful trio’s: Gary, Allen, Steve. RIP all Free Bird’s 🌹🙏🏻

@Mike-v5v9d

I wonder where they'd be now if they never got in the plane crash. They would be huge Rockstars like Jon Bon Jovi.

@darrylammons4446

Can’t forget Ed King, great album

@randywalker8960

@@darrylammons4446 absolutely correct my miss. Ed was a real legend from even the 60’s with Strawberry Alarm clocks to his major contributions with LS from early 70’s.

@WhiteOak09

I think about that to and sometimes I think they'd od or broke up because so much drugs but they were trying to get clean , so they'd probably been more huge than we can imagine , they're still selling out with no original members, great music never dies .

Lynyrd Skynyrd was just beginning to receive international acclaim with this album. "What's You Name" was played on radios and was a "popular" hit. It opened the door to non-southerners, Yankees, and those who thought Skynyrd was too "country". There is no telling where this catapult would have taken them in the music scene. We will never know. I'm grateful that they were so good that all I have to do is come to YouTube and listen to them. Fly on Free bird, fly on!
