Things Goin' On
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, have you ever lived down in the ghetto?
Have you ever felt the cold wind blow?
Well, if you don't know what I mean
Won't you stand up and scream?
'Cause there's things goin' on that you don't know
Let it roll

Too many lives they've spent across the ocean
Too much money been spent upon the moon
Well, until they make it right
I hope they never sleep at night
They better make some changes
And do it soon
Do it now, do it to it

(Woo, kick it)

Well, they're goin ruin the air that we breathe
Lord have mercy
They're gonna ruin us all, by and by
I'm telling all you beware
I don't think they really care
I think they just sit up there
And just get high, take it to 'em

Well, have you ever lived down in that ghetto?
Have you ever felt the cold wind blow?
Well, if you don't know what I mean
Won't you stand up and scream?
'Cause there's things goin' on that you don't know

Well, if you don't know what I mean
Won't you stand up and scream?
'Cause there's things goin' on you don't know

Tell it
Tell it, tell it

Things goin' on, bad things

Overall Meaning

The song Things Goin' On by Lynyrd Skynyrd is a powerful social commentary on the issues faced by people living in poverty and social inequality. The opening lyrics ask the listeners if they have ever lived in a ghetto and felt the cold wind blow, calling for those who do not understand the harsh realities faced by those living in poverty to stand up and take notice. The song also criticizes the government and society for spending more money on exploring space while ignoring pressing problems in their own backyard.

The chorus then warns of the impending environmental destruction caused by human activities, stating that they will ruin the air that we breathe and ultimately ruin us all. The second verse is a call to action, urging those in power to make changes soon before it's too late. The song ends with a repetition of the opening lines, emphasizing the urgent need for people to take notice and speak up against the injustices faced by the less fortunate.

Overall, Things Goin' On is a powerful message against societal and government neglect towards those living in poverty and environmental degradation. The lyrics urge listeners to stand up and take action for the betterment of society and the future.

one of the best songs ever written, this is real skinnerd, not the stuff the labels wanted em to write to make fortunes, I am god its not worn out on the radio, better thatta way... swamp music, need you, no good life, simple, tuesday, searchin, hunt, ever notice how every album till street survivors had at least one of these beautiful songs, them songs were for the real fans and ronnie made sure every album had at least one true skinnerd song, why they had such a battle with the labels, they constantly wanted Ronnie to write commercial crap, and ronnie said fugg ya'll go get your own band and write that crap, so he met em halfway, or almost they got the better but even their commercial stuff is fantastic..

ya always know the real skynyrd cuz you most likely never hear it on the radio, hale one of the best songs they ever wrote most never heard or or don't even know about, "all my friends" this was when they were still a cover bands, labels heard this and KNEW this band WAS something special.. but wanted amore "commercial feel and approach for not only records but coliseums..

I for one am glad Ronnie was a hard headed bull nose stubborn man, otherwise all these great songs would have been shelved for favor of crap labels want you to record, as I said Ronnie made sure there was at least one on every album, someo have more, I fear Ronnie grew weary of fighting with them 24/7/365, hale by their second album he wrote a blistering note about the sleazeballs at MCA.. I love that song, welp I love very skinnerd song for sure..

The ragtime piano, tambourine, killer guitar, and lyrical message--gosh, I wish this song wasn't so overlooked. One of my favorites from when I was a kid. I used to play this, and all their albums, on cassette as loud as I could make it. Great stuff.

it was the summer between 4th and 5th grade. i had a paper route, and would spend my money buying records. took a chance on this 1, cause they had long hair and spelled their name using bones (hadn't heard any of their music on the radio yet).i always plated the 2nd side 1st, and this was the 1st Skynyrd song i ever heard. now almost 44 years later, still 1 of my all times favorite songs.
