Unwrite That Song
Lynyrd Skynyrd Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I heard it on the late night radio
For the umpteenth time headin' from LA to the Florida coast
I was between black coffee and shifting gears
When the second verse took a turn and brought me to tears
They were talkin' about love, I do and forever
And how two people ought to stay together
Well the music hit me but the singer's got it all wrong
Unwrite that song
Unwrite that song
'Cause what he's saying to me don't go with that melody
Unsing them lines about those happy times
Don't they know she's gone
Unwrite that song

Well it was 3 AM and she was cryin' and her eyes were all red
When that music video came on and she sat up in her bed
She grabbed that whiskey bottle
Poured one last shot
And threw that empty glass at the TV and screamed

Unwrite that song
Unwrite that song
'Cause what he's saying to me don't go with that melody
Unsing them lines about those happy times
Don't they know he's gone
Unwrite that song

Well there was a time that I believed
All those words were true
And if I had a pen and paper right now
I know what I'd do

Unwrite that song
Unwrite that song
'Cause what he's saying to me don't go with that melody
Unsing them lines about those happy times
Don't they know he's gone
Unwrite that song
Lord I know she's gone

Unwrite that song

Overall Meaning

Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Unwrite That Song is a powerful ballad about the pain of lost love and the desire to undo the memories that a particular song evokes. The song opens with the singer driving alone late at night, listening to the radio, feeling like a ghost in his own life. The song he hears is about love and forever, about two people who should never part, but the singer got it all wrong. The lyrics hit him hard, bringing him to tears, because the happy memories the song brings back conflict with the harsh reality that his love is gone.

In the second verse, the song shifts focus to a woman who is also feeling the pain of lost love. It's 3 AM, she's crying with red eyes, and a music video comes on that brings back memories of happy times that have gone. She pours a shot of whiskey, throws the glass at the TV, and screams out in frustration. The chorus (Unwrite that song) is repeated here, but this time it's from the woman's perspective. She wants to undo the happy memories that don't reflect the reality of what's happened between her and her former lover.

The final verse provides insight into how deeply the song has affected the singer. He had once believed the words were true, and if he had a pen and paper now, he knows exactly what he'd do. He wants to unwrite their song, erase the memories that have been evoked by the lyrics that play on the radio.

Overall, the lyrics are powerful and emotional. They are a reminder that music can be an incredibly powerful force, evoking memories and emotions that might lie dormant until the perfect song comes along. It’s about the power of music to make us feel alive, and the pain of having that feeling taken away.

Great song, great album, great band. Just no keeping these boys down.

@TheSpawnofSkynyrd

For those who say this "isn't skynyrd," Ronnie Van Zant (the greatest lyricist and vocalist this world has ever seen and will ever see, stated that "Skynyrd isn't a group...it's a bunch of friends playing music they love." I mean, hell, his YOUNGER BROTHER...BROTHER...Same blood, fronts the band. Gary is still there. Rickey, who was in the early Skynyrd days (used to hang out and play along with) are all with the band still. This is Skynyrd...like it or not.

@MikeyRamone91

This should be one of their best albums in the 2000s. It came out on Sep. 29, 2009. I first got to know the band from the "Con Air" action-thriller movie, (1997) on October 14, 2009 by listening to 'Sweet Home Alabama' as the OST from the feature film. Brings back now, for me, A LOT of memories... I was in high school back then. Jeez.
