Overall Meaning

The song Eirigh Suas A Stoirin by Máire Brennan is a lament about separation and longing for a loved one. The lyrics speak to the emotions one feels when someone they cherish is far away, and the sense of loneliness that comes with it. The singer calls out to her beloved to wake up, open the door, and let her in. She speaks of a nearby pub where the landlady keeps an eye on her, and where she can drink while waiting for her lover. Though she longs to be with him, she knows that she cannot force him to return her feelings. She speaks of her heart lifting each time she thinks of him, and the pain of knowing he is so far away.

The second verse speaks of the memories that fill her when she wakes up in the morning. She watches the sun rise and thinks of the home she left behind. She imagines the people who live there going about their business and wishes she could be with them. She describes the leaves falling and the wind blowing through the trees, a metaphor for the sadness and loss she feels. The final verse is a series of more personal musings, about the love she has for her partner, the sense of abandonment she feels when he is gone, and the uniqueness of their relationship.
