Pilgrim
Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, what a world I was born into
Warriors are lying down
Hush little head – you'll get sick
So sorrow-filled I am
Old wise river take me to the sea
Breathe free
Like pilgrims on the Camino
I go, I go

All the time I just want to
Let go and go and (get a hold of it)
All the time I just want to
All the time I just want to
Fuck it up and say I'll (Get a hold of it)
All the time I just want to

Oh, what a world I was born into
Babies are on the thrones
Hush little buddy, you'll get sick
And shiver to your bones
Old wild river take me to the sea
Be free
Like pilgrims on the Camino
I go, I go

All the time I just want to
Let go and go and (Get a hold of it)
All the time I just want to
All the time I just want to
Fuck it up and say I'll (Get a hold of it)
All the time I just want to

Why do you and I live on and on?
I believe it's not a question anymore

Why do you and I live on and on? (Get a hold of it)
I believe it's not a question anymore (Get a hold of it)

(Get a hold of it)
(Get a hold of it)

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of MØ's song Pilgrim are a poignant start to a reflection on the state of the world in which we live. The first line, 'oh, what a world I was born into,' sets the tone for a sense of disillusionment with the state of affairs around us. MØ highlights the fact that even the strongest amongst us are falling, with 'warriors' lying down, and the comforting tone of 'hush little head – you'll get sick' showing a sense of helplessness in the face of tragedy. The feeling of sadness deepens with the repetition of 'all the time I just want to' as if telling the listener that the world can be so difficult to face that one is tempted to give up, to 'fuck it up and say I'll get a hold of it.'

However, despite this bleak view of the world, the chorus brings hope, with MØ asking to be taken to the sea by an 'old wise river' and breathing freely like 'pilgrims on the Camino.' There's a sense of release and relief here, as if the sea represents a return to nature and a connection with something that transcends our human problems. This desire to get away from the world is mirrored in the second verse, where babies sit on thrones, and the only advice is to 'hush little buddy, you'll get sick.' The repetition of 'all the time I just want to' carries the same feeling of wanting to escape that was in the first verse.

In the end, MØ brings the song to a close with the lines, 'why do you and I live on and on? I believe it's not a question anymore.' This final statement can be interpreted in several ways. It could be seen as a surrender to the fact that life goes on, whether we like it or not. Or, it could be seen as a call to action, to get involved in changing the world and making it a better place. In either case, the song leaves the listener with a sense of the complexity of the world and the difficulty of finding one's place in it.

I saw her live last night in Toronto... I was one person away from the front stage, and was within a hand's touch away from her most of the time. I have to honestly say, that Karen/Mo and her band put on the most energetic performance I've ever seen. She was so passionate on set, and worked her ass off during the show. The crowd was going crazy, and I even got the chance to dance next to her several times when she ventured into the audience. I got to carry her for a bit when she moshed into the crowd, too. I also was able to meet, chat, and get a picture with her after the show. Very nice and talented gal.
