She is the elder sister of the singer Enya, who was also briefly a member of Clannad in the early 1980s.
Her music is usually classified as New Age or Celtic. She accepts the Celtic label, but has at times indicated a slight discomfort with being seen as "New Age" as much of her music is strongly Christian, with some of her songs showing additional influences from her Catholic upbringing.
Since 2002, she has promoted herself as Moya Brennan -- a spelling closely resembling the phonetic pronunciation of her name for those not familiar with the Irish variant of the spelling.
According to her official website, her early influences included the likes of Joni Mitchell and the Beach Boys, before she discovered "the extraordinary wealth of Celtic history and melody on her doorstep".
Moya is also a member of Irish vocal supergroup T with the Maggies.

Siúl thart fán chladaigh
Éist le ceol binn na farraige
Siúl thart fán chladaigh
An áit a mothaíonn túsa suaimhneas
An áit a mothaíonn túsa ciúnas
Amach is isteach
Fuaim na gaoithe dóchas beo
Lig do shúile sineadh go bun an aeir
Féach anois tá sólás ag mo chroi
Amharc amach ar an fharraige
Gan comhrá na comhairle ar an trá bhán
An áit a chim gorm glas an uisce
An áit a chimes tonnaí ag damhsa romham
Ag éisteacht leis an taoide
Amach is isteach
Fuaim na gaoithe dóchas beo
Lig do shúile síneadh go bun an aeir
Féach anois tá sólás ag mo chroi
Éist le coel binn na farraige
Luath leat fhéin ar maidin
An áit a mbíonn cumhacht luí na gréine
An áit a mbionn draíocht dheireadh an lae
Ag éisteacht leis an taoide
Amach is isteach
Fuaim na gaoithe dóchas beo
Lig do shúile sineadh go bun an aeir
Féach anois tá sólás ag mo chroi
The Irish language song, "An Fharraige" by Máire Brennan, speaks about the beauty and tranquility of the sea. The singer asks the listener to listen to the sweet melody of the sea as they walk on the beach. The place where they feel calm and peaceful is where they feel the true essence of the sea. The singer describes the sound of the wind along with the sound of the sea, living hope in her heart, as she looks up to the sky.
The singer encourages us to listen to the tide coming in and out of the shore, to feel the presence of the sea, and to allow ourselves to be captivated by the beauty of the sea. The song goes on to describe the beauty of the sea, especially the blue and green colors of the water. The sea is described as a magical place where the waves dance before your eyes, and the listener can observe the sparkle and magic of the sea.
"An Fharraige" is a song that reflects the deep-rooted connection between the Irish people and the sea. As an island country, the sea holds immense importance and significance in the Irish culture. The song vividly paints the picture of a long-standing love affair between the people of Ireland and the sea.
