She is the elder sister of the singer Enya, who was also briefly a member of Clannad in the early 1980s.
Her music is usually classified as New Age or Celtic. She accepts the Celtic label, but has at times indicated a slight discomfort with being seen as "New Age" as much of her music is strongly Christian, with some of her songs showing additional influences from her Catholic upbringing.
Since 2002, she has promoted herself as Moya Brennan -- a spelling closely resembling the phonetic pronunciation of her name for those not familiar with the Irish variant of the spelling.
According to her official website, her early influences included the likes of Joni Mitchell and the Beach Boys, before she discovered "the extraordinary wealth of Celtic history and melody on her doorstep".
Moya is also a member of Irish vocal supergroup T with the Maggies.

Drifting drifting
Hear the beating heart
Searching for love
Hear the beating heart
Drifting in silence
It echoes like circles
Around your heart
Show me the magic door
Show me the silver cloud
Open your heart
Let it fall into place
Show me the circle's edge
I hear the beating heart
Is drifting is drifting
I hear the beating heart
Searching for love
I hear the beating heart
Is drifting in silence
It echoes Around your heart
In Máire Brennan's song "Beating Heart," the beating heart represents a sense of longing and searching for love. The repetition of "hear the beating heart" creates a sense of urgency and desire, as if the heart is imploring the listener to pay attention to it. The heart is depicted as "drifting" and "echoing," reflecting a sense of aimlessness and an inability to find love. The line "show me the magic door / show me the silver cloud" suggests a longing for something magical or otherworldly that will provide relief from the heart's struggles. The heart is searching for a sense of completeness and a place where it can finally fall into place, indicated by the line "let it fall into place / show me the circle's edge."
Overall, "Beating Heart" is a poignant representation of the search for love and connection, using the metaphor of a beating heart as a central theme. The urgency and longing expressed in the lyrics create a powerful emotional effect that many listeners can relate to.
