Dancing On Glass
Mötley Crüe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't find my doctor
My bones can't take the ache
If ya dance with the devil
Your day will come to pay

Downtown
Fuel injected dreams
Are bursting at the seams
Am I in Persia
Or am I just insane?

Downtown downtown
One foot in the grave
Such a foolish child
For a date with death
Sight the dotted line

I've been through hell
And I've never goin' back

To dancing on glass
Going way too fast
Gonna burn and crash
Valentine's in London
Found me in the trash

Downtown
Need one more rush
Then I know, I know I'll stop
One extra push
Last trip to the top

Downtown, downtown
Silver spoon and needle
Witchy tombstone smile
I'm no puppet
I engrave my veins with style

I've been through hell
And I'm never goin' back
To dancing one glass

Dancin' dancin'
Sweet Chiva, you were my Jesus

Overall Meaning

The song "Dancing on Glass" by Mötley Crüe describes the dangers and consequences of heavy drug use in a way that portrays addiction as a destructive, all-consuming force. The lyrics narrate the story of a drug addict who is unable to find his doctor and is in deep physical pain caused by his addiction. It's implied that the singer has been on this self-destructive path for a long time and has been "through hell" before but still can't leave his addiction behind.

The singer asks himself if he's "in Persia or just insane," which symbolizes his altered state of mind and detachment from reality. The lyrics also talk about how addiction can cause a person's dreams and aspirations to burst at the seams, and how the addiction itself becomes the only thing the addict lives for. The chorus, "Going way too fast, gonna burn and crash," highlights the consequences of addiction and how it can completely destroy a person's life.

The line "sweet Chiva, you were my Jesus" is a reference to Chiva, a slang term for heroin, and suggests that addiction has consumed the singer to the point where he's put his trust and faith in the drug, replacing Jesus as his savior.

Overall, "Dancing On Glass" by Mötley Crüe is a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and the devastating consequences it can have on an individual's life.

Best song on the album, and among their best ever. Monstrously underrated.

Funny you use the word "monstrous"... That was one of the early potential titles of the album they ended up calling Dr Feelgood. Another was SSRR, which stood for sex, sex, and rock n roll... Apparently.

Matt Smith

One of the most harrowing songs ever written about heroin addiction. It just tells it like it is. One question about the lyrics. In this song and in the song from the same album 'Wild Side" (my all-time favorite Crue song), Nikki refers to "puppets." In this track he says, "I'm no puppet; I engrave my veins with style." In "Wild Side" he says "Name dropping no names; glamorize cocaine; puppets with strings with gold." Is a puppet in the context of these two songs a "fake" person. Like the character in "Dancing" shoots heroin better than wannabe, "weekend warrior" users? In "Wild Side," it seems more obvious. It reminds of a Steely Dan song from 1980 called "Glamour Profession" which is about how Los Angeles cocaine dealers would use coke as their way to be associated with celebrities or gain social power within the celeb community. So in this sense "Puppets with strings of gold" could be seen as cocaine dealers who adorn jewelry and other items to make themselves look more powerful than they actually are. I can understand it if you feel I might be over-scrutinizing these things ("just enjoy the damn songs Matt"), but it backs my theory that one of the major things that separated Motley from the alme L.A. hair bands that followed them was that when Sixx wanted to, he could really write some great, great lyrics. The kind of lyrics that you can discuss with someone to try to detect the meaning of the song. For every sex/booze/cars song like "Ten Seconds To Love," you had these songs like "Dancing" and "Wild Side."

At this time “glass” was pharmaceutical grade speed. It was clear as glass. And I was a dealer in SoCal in those days…

He says “I’m no punk, engrave my veins with style”

@cody8804 umm it's "name-dropping no-names"...

No way Nikki by 1987 thought of himself and his band as "no-names". Not a chance that he was consciously referring to MC.
It might have been a weird "Freudian slip" because anyone with a brain knows that musically speaking the Crue don't rate a mention talentwise or as ever having released a groundbreaking, original record.

Brad Brown

I always thought in both instances he meant that he himself is the puppet because he's not in control but being led along by the heroin . Just like in Metallica's Master of Puppets , Cocaine is the master and the user is the puppet

Omg dude, I just wanted to say how much I loved your comment, so refreshing to hear a true crue fan who knows what the lyrics mean, and you're so right man, I never actually really thought about the lyrics to this song but when it was recorded in 87 Sixx was at the height of his addiction and now you mention it "found me in the trash" likely is referencing when he od'd st a dealers place and they thought he was dead and put him in the trash...
Anyway dude, I don't know any other fan as big as me, except my mate r.i.p who was a die hard like me, and I would love to find some new friends who are also die hards, so feel free to add me Catherine Milstead on Facebook if u wanna chat about crue anytime dude cheers \m/
