Face Down In The Dirt
Mötley Crüe Lyrics

It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it [Repeat: x 4]

Yeah, all I ever heard as a kid was I'm born to lose
All I ever wanted was a shot at breakin' the rules

I wanna make a lot of money
But I don't wanna go to school
I don't wanna get a real job
I don't wanna be you

I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead
I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head

Well I ran away and pawned my soul for a switchblade knife
I met a man from Mars and a couple other freaks that night

I wanna take on the world
I wanna bang a million girls
I don't wanna wear a 3-piece suit
I don't wanna be you

I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead
I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head

I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead
I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head

I wanna make a lot of money
But I don't wanna go to school
I don't wanna get a real job
I don't wanna be you

I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead
I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head

I'd rather be dead, I'd rather be dead
Yeah I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead
I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head

I'd rather be dead, yeah I'd rather be dead

I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head
With a bullet in my head

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Face Down In The Dirt" by Mötley Crüe express the desires of a young person who doesn't want to conform to societal norms. The singer has always been told that they are "born to lose," but they want to break the rules and make something of themselves without going to school or getting a "real job." They'd rather die than become like everyone else, and they make that clear in the chorus, singing "I'd rather be face down in the dirt with a bullet in my head" twice.

The second verse adds some specifics to the singer's desires. They've run away and "pawned [their] soul for a switchblade knife," and they've met some "freaks" who have shown them that there are other ways to live. They want to "take on the world" and "bang a million girls," rather than wear a "3-piece suit" like the people who are telling them how to live. The repetition of the chorus at the end of the song reinforces the idea that the singer would rather die than give up their dreams of living the way they want to.

Overall, "Face Down In The Dirt" is about a young person's desire to live life on their own terms, even if it means taking risks and rejecting conventional ideas about success. The song urges listeners to embrace their own desires and not let others dictate their paths in life.
