Livin' In The Know
Mötley Crüe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My girlfriend says I can't do this
My wife says don't do that
Another case of PMS,
Gonna have me a heart attack
I need a small vacation man
Life's a mini-wreck
Told my lawyers and accountants, done took
All I can take

Livin' in the no
One more fucker breathin' down my back
Think I will explode

Livin' in the no
Everyday, everywhere I go
Livin in the no

TV says 10 dead for Christmas
Stalker is on the loose
Another freeway shooting
I'll be hangin' by my noose
I can't seem to shake it
I can't seem to bend the spell
Special thanks to Mom and Dad
For bringing me to Hell

Livin' in the no
One more sucker breathin' down my back
Think I will explode
Livin' in the no
How'd you like to live your life livin' in the no

You heard what The Magic caught?
One too many penthouse pets
Get some protection baby
Lord knows you might be next

Livin' in the no
One more mother breathin' down my back
Think I will explode
Livin' in the no
How'd you like to live your life livin' in the no

Livin' in the no
One more fucker breathin' down my back
Think I will explode
Livin' in the no

Everyday, everywhere I go
Livin' in the no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mötley Crüe's song Livin' In The Know express the frustration and exhaustion of living in a world full of constant stress and negativity. The singer in the song is constantly berated and controlled by the women in his life, battling with anxiety, and dealing with the endless stream of bad news in the media. The use of profanity and aggressive language in the chorus further emphasizes the feeling of being trapped and suffocated.

The first verse describes the singer's struggle to navigate the demands of his girlfriend and wife. He feels like he's at the mercy of their constantly changing moods, and the result is a feeling of being on the brink of a heart attack. The second verse moves to the broader world, describing the endless stream of bad news in the media, and the sense of a looming threat that he can't escape. The reference to "Mom and Dad" suggests that this sense of despair is of long-standing, and may have resulted from a dysfunctional upbringing.

Overall, the song is a lament for a world where it feels like the deck is constantly stacked against you, and there's no escape from the pressures and demands of life.

This album was sinfully over looked! I saw them in Denver on this tour. It KICKED MY ASS!!!

I love this album! I couldn’t wait till it came out in 1994. I was 18,19. Still have it in my car and now I’m 42. “Drift Away” beautiful song!

AC

I was 19 then and remember buying it that summer of 94. I haven't really heard the album in a long time but feels fresh, and somehow reminds me a bit of the groove of bands like Alice in chains.

The opening riff sounds just like the opening riff for Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

This should have been on the final cut of the U.S. album and been the lead single. It blows Hooligan's Holiday out of the water!
