Primal Scream
Mötley Crüe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Broke dick dog
My head slung low
Tail knocked in the dirt

Time and time
Of being told
Trash is all I'm worth
When I was just a young boy
Had to take a little grief
Now that I'm much older
Don't put your shit on me

Grab it and shake
Reach down scrape it
You just got to

Primal scream and shout
Let that mother out
You just gotta say "Hey"
Primal scream & shout
Oooh tear it out
You just gotta say

Janou said
Meters are red
Blow a neurotic fuse

Show a little
A little pain
Unlock a lotta truth

When daddy was a young man
His home was livin' Hell
Mama tried to be so perfect
Now her mind's a padded cell, ya

Grab it and shake
Reach down scrape it
You just got to

Primal scream and shout
Let that mother out
You just gotta say "Hey"
Primal scream & shout
Oooh tear it out
You just gotta say

Hey man, get out of my face
I deal with my problems at my own pace
With your screwed-down, anti-human views
Deal with the pressures by playing the blues
If you want to live life on your own terms
You gotta be willing to crash and burn

Primal scream and shout
Let that mother out
You just gotta say "Hey"
Primal scream & shout
Oooh tear it out
You just gotta say

Scream shout Come on come on come on
Scream shout

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Motley Crue's Primal Scream reflects the journey of a man who has been underestimated and undervalued, but he refuses to believe that trash is all he is worth. The song begins with the image of a "broke dick dog" with his head slung low and tail knocked in the dirt, symbolizing the singer's feelings of low self-worth. He has been told repeatedly that he's worth nothing and that he's trash. However, the singer has grown older and wiser, refusing to take on the emotional baggage of others. He tells them not to put their problems on him, and he's determined to shake off the negative thoughts and emotions.

The chorus of the song talks about the importance of primal screams and shouts in releasing pain and truth. The lyrics encourage listeners to grab whatever is troubling them and shake it off, and then let out a primal scream and shout to release the pent-up emotions.

The second verse of the song introduces another character named Janou who tells the singer to blow "a neurotic fuse" and show "a little pain" to unlock a "lotta truth." Here, the song refers to the importance of confronting one's buried emotions to gain insight into oneself. The verse also touches upon the idea of intergenerational trauma and how it affects individuals' mental health. The singer talks about how his father's home was a living hell, forcing his mother into mental instability.

Overall, Primal Scream is a song that encourages listeners to let go of negative emotions and embrace their primal nature to release repressed pain.

Countless tracks from countless artists of that era are underrated and never played on air. Real Shame. But nice to know you're exposing your youngster to music. Not meaning to be your mentor, but just do it selectively.
.
I grew up responsibly enough, knowing that I had to separate fantasy from reality. We all have bad days; sometimes I was full of rage and I let out my frustrations on a punching bag and "Primal Scream" or Crue's "Wild Side" blasting in background allowed me to vent energy. ....a much more appropriate method than attacking a living being.
.
What's my point? Critics may blame hard lyrics turning kids into maniacs & muderers. Not true. It's okay to temporarily immerse oneself into violent (?) fantasy to expel human emotions. We all need a release once in a while. Key Factor is to Return to Reality. I think that's where many parents fail to accomplish, resulting in ill-tempered kids.
.
Please don't be offended by my entry; I have no evil agenda. Just found it interesting you headbanging with your baby daughter; emphasis on "baby" and the type of music at her tender age. Do it right, she'll be strong, polite, and proud with a distinct personality.
.
Back to the underrated topic: Who knows? The music industry works like any other. It's all based on ratings and money. We heard the popular songs all the time over the airwaves, compared to equally valuable "B-Side" recordings didn't knew existed unless we played the whole album in its entirety. If it wasn't on the airwaves and we wanted it, we were forced to buy the album to hear it. Money spent, money made. Capitalism at work.
.
At least for those of us who got to experience the "B-Sides" and soak up the tunes, it (for me) made it even that much more special. More value is placed upon things harder to get. Primal Scream .... oh yeah!
.
Okay, so ....salutations... from this 55-yr old stranger (schrimpieman). I had a few minutes to share. Rock On !!

From a technical standpoint, this is the best each of them has ever sounded. That bass line, the drumming intro, Vince's powerful voice, and Mick's killer solo and slides. All so perfect.

All these rusty cages are fuckin with my shiny nail BAD

Video clip style is fantastic, too & Vince is in perfect R&R god shape !

Mark Harc

I'd agree- this is actually a really powerful recording and performance. The intro bass and drums are supremely tight with some groove in it too. It is very hard to make sixteenth notes groove like that.
