Smoke The Sky
Mötley Crüe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Smoke my hoochie
You say that I'm the Devil
Reali thc
Marco Polo hailed it Heaven
Socrates inhaled it too
Mr. President tell the truth
You're the great exaggerators
Since 1932
Telling evils of the reefer
But all through time we've
Smoked the sky smoke the sky
Home grown version
Compliments the senses
Opens up the mind
JFK sold us freedom
Or was it just a business toke
'63 went up in smoke
He was the great seducer
Crawling from our tv's
Breathed into our future
And before he died he
Smoked the sky, smoke the sky
When it's time we'll smoke the sky
BC hailed it heaven
I inhaled it too
Reali-thc
When it's time we'll
Smoke the sky
Smoke the sky
When it's time we'll smoke the sky
When it's time we'll smoke the

When it's time we'll toke the sky
When it's time we'll smoke the sky

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mötley Crüe's "Smoke The Sky" speak to the cultural history and social commentary surrounding marijuana use. The chorus, "Smoke the sky," refers to the act of smoking marijuana, while the references to various historical figures who have smoked weed, such as Marco Polo and Socrates, suggest that marijuana use has been a part of human culture for centuries. However, the song also critiques the demonization of marijuana by authorities and the media, dating back to the "reefer madness" era of the 1930s. The line "You're the great exaggerators, telling evils of the reefer" points to the fear-mongering tactics used to discourage marijuana use.

The lyrics also touch on the political dimensions of marijuana use, with references to JFK's alleged involvement in the drug trade and the countercultural movements of the 1960s. The line "JFK sold us freedom, or was it just a business toke" suggests that the counterculture's embrace of marijuana was both a form of rebellion against authority and a way of monetizing drug culture. The song's closing lines ("When it's time we'll smoke the sky") suggest a fatalistic attitude towards marijuana use, implying that it's only a matter of time before societal attitudes towards the drug shift.

@Lance Urbi it’s all about name recognition for the record labels

Lance Urbi

Maybe it shouldn't have been called Motley Crue, maybe a different name? Like Pantera/Damage Plan kinda thing. But I think that there was an insane amount of chemistry there. It's an underrated album, to say the least.

Ronald Lee Brogren

Had they just changed their name and chugged along they’d been beasts … amazing album!!!
