M.A.S.H. was a hard rock band from Slovania active in the 1980's. They recorded a 11 track demo, though it was never officially released.

M.A.S.H. was a thrash metal band from Poland active in the 1990's. They released two full-length studio albums, New Power (1992) and Animal (1995).

The kind, soft-spoken chaplain who had more genuine morality than self-proclaimed moralists was also a master poker player, dealt with the black market regularly, was probably the most physically fit member of the staff, once rode a helicopter landing skid to act as a human counterweight to keep the chopper stable, ran in to mortar fire to rescue refugees, and had a powerful punch on top of all of that. Father Mulcahey was the most badass member of the 4077th.

Mulcahy was the toughest man in that unit. I’ll never forget when he came into post-op to deal with two soldiers who wouldn’t stop fighting. He came in from working out, sweating and wearing boxing gloves and told them to remember what it said in the Good Book - “Love thy neighbour or I’ll punch your lights out!” But he also kept his faith, even with all the suffering and insanity around him and at the end, when leaving the camp, he remarked “When they tell us we have to do time in purgatory, we can all say ‘No thanks. I’ve done mine.’”

Only if you consider changing the minds of men to be nothing, altering the fates of nations and history but trivial, and founding the concept of individual worth to be unimportant. Faith has broken the shackles of slavery, declared the primacy of law, and cared for the discarded of society.

And all of that is assuming that we live in a world of but stardust and chance, if there is anything to religion, then faith may be capable of far more. If one wishes to be an atheist, that can be an honest belief, as honest as any other. But attempting to paint over or rewrite thousands of years of history and accomplishment merely makes your personal atheism look insecure, unwilling to confront anything but a strawman.

Ironically, it puts you in the same place as the 'faithful' who have so little faith that they try to build walls around it and 'protect their children from outside influences.' Both merely reveal a shallow belief, that must try to hide from challenge or other ideas.

Espiecally the one with Father Mulcahy sermon and dying soldier, the one with soldier that thought he was Christ ("Yes. All the best chaplains I met in the Army were more like Mulcahy than any of the morons you see on church TV. I'm a practicing pagan, and have been for a long time. As a young officer arriving at my first duty station I was informed that the base padre wanted to talk to me. With trepidation I went to his office and after he confirmed my faith he said "Please, sit, have coffee. I have so many questions. You aren't the only one on base, but you are the only officer. Help me understand how I can minister to, and be of service to, our men." SoB still has a couple of my books. ;-P

One of my favorite people I knew growing up was Pastor John O'Connor, Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Chaplin Corps during Vietnam, afterwards became a prison chaplain. I knew the kindly retired version of him, but you could feel that because of his experiences nothing you could say would faze him, and he would listen, really truly listen. Those are men of God, not televangelists or preachers who expect you to listen to them, but those that sit and listen to their parishioners, heal those around them.

I am glad to hear that chaplains are treated with such reverence by military personnel. I remember watching an episode of Generation Kill, which was an account of the 1st Marine recon battalion in the Gulf War. There was a scene where the chaplain was approaching some of the troops to attend services. I was really perturbed by how disrespectful they were towards him. When I read comments like yours, it is really encouraging.

The amount of God's work Father Mulcahy was able to perform in a war is mind boggling. Not only did he serve a purpose for the military, but his service to the orphanage is what really inspired me about him. In the last episode he sets up things for Colonel Potter at the orphanage and at the point in the show he is already gone but he is still making sure that orphanage had hope.

When I became really sick while serving in Germany (myocarditis that almost killed me) it was a chaplain that first and foremost visited me in the 'Krankenhaus' or German hospital. Knowing how badly off I was he pulled out his cellphone and basically ordered me to call my folks, charges be damned. He prayed with me, asked if I was being taken care of, and if I needed anything. Wish I could remember his name, he really helped me out at my weakest.

The Christ of the storybook bible certainly forgives those that have "sinned", but it is a hollow faith to seek absolution but never actually change your ways. If the bible is real and there is a heaven then the majority of these "believers" will not get let in.

This is a just one set of examples that embrace a hollow faith.

Father Mulcahy like WInchester didn't get many good moments, but I thought of this one and the one where he finds a boy who's still alive while he's performing last rites. There was one recommended where he performed a tracheotomy. I remember Colonel Potter put him in for a promotion but he got passed over, again.

I love Father Mulchachy's comments to the soldier between 1:00 and 1:45 of this piece. Mulchachy says " You take refuge in this house the Lord when it serves your purpose and when it doesn't you desecrate it by pointing a deadly weapon at another human being. A faith of convience is a hollow faith!"

above all other characters Mulcahy was the closest incarnation of the book's description. He's considered one of the most respected members of the camp; ignore the movie version...where he's naïve and borderline stupid. He was originally the replacement for Shanking Sammy, who the men hated. Mulcahy on arrival introduced himself, got thrown out of the swamp and was told don't come back unless you bring a fifth of scotch. He returned and asked "will this do?" presenting sacramental wine still in the cross bearing dispenser. the docs liked his moxie and his belief and the taste of his offering...calling him Dago Red from then on.

Never saw a Chaplain carry a sidearm. That’s why they have a Chaplain’s Assistant: an Enlisted man with assigned weapon. He does all the regular soldiering stuff, then drives and protects the Chaplain from enemy fire. There was one Chaplain who won the Medal of Honor: everyone should read that record. Now THAT was a badass Chaplain! We had a Chaplain who was a red-haired, airborne qualified, combat-jump qualified, Protestant, hard drinking/card playing, favorite. Against all regulations, he wore a fantastic, huge, handlebar mustache. Our CG never mentioned it. When we attended Dining In ceremonies [no spouses, only Officers], after the meal there was drinking and poker. He’d drink everyone under the table; and woe be to him who played poker with him.

He wasn't being a badass at all. The father was being a priest. He was being a human and cared for another in pain and disarmed the soldier who was really afraid. That is compassion for another, and that soldier really didn't want to shoot the father. He was afraid. Terrible to be in a situation where you feel your life is over. Humbling when you get through it and see that you can find love- to realize you are worth loving.

Mulcahy was what I thought all priests were like growing up as a Catholic in the 80s.I didn’t have any shady priests in my immediate area, and have dealt with and still do have dealings with several very good and dedicated ones. Sadly, Mulcahy is not the standard of the upper echelons of the faith.

The hollow faith thing is something I run into with people trying to convert me to their brand of Christianity. They don't seem to grasp it's not as simple as a choice. I can't just proclaim myself Christian and boom I have faith. I have to see something that convinces me, otherwise it would be hollow faith. I place a high value on honesty so that would be a lie and I couldn't live like that.

@Billy Bob thank you for fleshing that out. These are not uncommon objections- 1) the scripture doesn't seem special, 2) why do good people (or innocent animals) suffer evil, and 3) No God seems necessary to explain what we see in the development of life.

I don't think Christians have a good answer for #2, we are just supposed to accept on faith that the sufferings of this present world no matter how heartbreaking they are, are not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be revealed. OTOH I am not sure that our science is advanced enough to establish #3 to be fact. Not saying there was no "evolution" but my views on what the scripture says point to way more "evolution" than what most people think it says- it just isn't nature alone driving the process. That's what our science can't test for so they don't know any better than Christians do on point #2. I have a video up on how it is mostly a false conflict anyway.

That leaves #1. I can understand your lack of satisfaction with some of the traditional views of the text however. Hopefully, you will find better answers to those questions. C

Actually, Jesus did tell us it's that simple as a decision. He said, "Believe." The disciples echoed that message. In the Book of Acts, when anyone asked them this same question, the response was simply, "Believe on The Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." Hebrews tells us that without faith, it's impossible to please God. In order to come to Him, we must first believe that He Is. We tend to complicate things. But if we follow scripture, it all becomes simple as a choice. 👍
