Sexodus
M.I.A. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you want to come on this exodus?
If you got swag, fuck with us
And do you wanna ride like a crusader?
You ain't gotta Christian Dior (christ endour)
My blood type is no negative
But I'm positive that I'm too deep
Switch the light on when we hit the sheets
Truly what I see is all I keep
I see you stacked chicks their views are blocked in
When I help 'em you say broke in
I see you locked in you say I don't let you in
How come all this drama's still trending

Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for
Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for

New frontier I got news from there
Let's sail it to a new frequency
I left the graveyard selling full of fancy
Bring your homie with transparency
My blood type is no negative
But I'm positive the dark ain't deep
Just switch your light on when we hit the streets
Truly what I see is all I keep
My sights are set in higher times
And my eyes can see in 3D
Make it bright and I see 360
I can get you, but you can't get me

Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for
Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for

Yeah you keep on telling me you wanna have it all
Tell me what for
Yeah you keep on telling me you wanna have it all
Tell me what for

Cash and Kashmir, gold in Zaier
I got a new want from over there
You can drink a mint tea by the Red Sea
As you're living out whose fantasy
Yeah the sun the moon are both
Hitting the hood and the heat's too hot to be cool
Yeah I'm sailing my bed to a better man school
And it's two in the afternoon
We already bullet-proof we got a big crew
And we're running on a force that's true
We don't fear you wear up-to-date shoes
Or fall for the point of view

Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for
Baby you can have it all
Tell me what for

Yeah you keep on telling me you wanna have it all
Tell me what for
Yeah you keep on telling me you wanna have it all
Tell me what for

What d'you want it all for?

Overall Meaning

The song "Sexodus" by M.I.A is an eclectic mix of pop, hip hop, and world music. The lyrics of the song have deep meaning and are an exploration of society's socio-economic and political unrest. The song urges the listener to be a part of the exodus, which can be seen as a movement for change. M.I.A invites people who have swag to join her on this journey of social revolution. The song's opening line asks if the listener wants to come on the exodus, which can be interpreted as a call for a revolution for a better world.

Further, the lyrics delve into M.I.A's personal musings, where she discusses her blood type and has a clear view of what she wants. She maintains that although she is no negative, she is positive that she is too deep. The second verse talks about new opportunities or frontiers and how one can leave past negativity behind to explore or chart a new path towards a new reality. The chorus, where M.I.A repeats "Baby, you can have it all, Tell me what for," is an affirmation that attaining material wealth or power is not what the exodus is about. It is more about a coming together for the greater good.

Finally, M.I.A talks about the current world's state, where there are many people who are locked or trapped, and how this drama continues to trend. The song challenges those who wear up-to-date shoes or follow popular opinions and urges the listener to see beyond the surface to be a part of the force for change.

it's a shame not more so called critics tackled how exodus-sexodus fits into her entire album and her own mythology.

one way i see it (and this is only one way) is unlike other MIA albums, MATANGI follows a largely tho not completely linear storytelling trajectory.

starting off with karmagedon+matangi: a roll call to get on the dancefloor as metaphor to get involved - engage in the world wherever we are, however we can.

there's only 1 u. warriors in a dance. it's cool it takes 2 ima still fux w u come walk with me. attention.

then we have EXodus. its sonics as are more sensual (compared 2 sexodus). different from mere sex, which in the western's conception, is largely viewed as lacking spiritual depth. a lot can be said about the sensuality of being unshakeable in one's beliefs especially when we connect to a larger group. revolution is not just violent, it requires an acknowledgment of people's humanity as whole and not as is usually perpetuated by western media. we are not broken and dehumanized.

there's bad girls, boom skit, dbt, yala, bring the noize. all these songs are much more confrontational than the previous half. yet it gains its power from the earlier half where we have now been called to the floor to march to empire's gates.

lights + know it aint right stands out as softer songs. it is a quick look at the introspection in the journey. could be seen as moments of weakness. but only if you see self-evaluation and vulnerability as weakness. when really it can be immense spiritual growth.

then we get to SEXodus. which have harder beats the drums the helicopters. perhaps even more spare despite these harder sonics. it almost seems like salvation bt i dont think MIA is hopeful without being critical of the world we live in. i dont think there is any resolution. not when the world is nowhere near resolution. i almost feel like the physical aspect of resistance against empire 'ends' at bring the noize. cos there's where we're at too, in the world we live in. after which, the personal and spiritual comes back in main focus as a place of evaluation maybe even exhaustion ambivalence (but NOT apathy). so in the 'end' Sexodus is a critical hope and imagining of the resistance being fruitful. where fight and flight converges into a transcendence that doesn't necessarily prioritize the individual but entire communities of resistance.

[[[[[YEAAA. also, if you grew up on bollywood films, you'd also know that a lot of the times, there will be one main song in a film, which takes on different forms throughout the film. the melodies words etc will b the same, bt the instrumentation changes according to the mood of the arch in the film. e.g. the same song can b joyful in one scene, yet take on a mood of despair in the other all while the content of the song remains the same.]]]]]
