Really showing my age here but the first time I ever saw M.I.A play live was one of her first shows ever as an artist professionally.

She came to my university in England with Santigold as her opening act. A crowd was there to watch her sing Galang.

She really blew my mind then and she still does to this day. Just love her so much - she's so unique and futuristic.

The big label set up doesn't work for M.I.A and because she won't get naked and take off her clothes, she can't be this huge star in this nudity obsessed world. Adore her for sticking to her guns.

This was much more of a problem in 2010 than it is now so I'm not sure what you mean. It's something that has gradually improved over time. It's still a problem but it was much worse in 2010 than now, and even worse in the many decades before it. Streaming both saved the music industry and gave a ton of artistic control back to artists.

Certainly you can also interpret that it's a representation of what sexualization does to someone's mind. The glitter and frames are tacky on purpose. Totally agree. I don't know what it is...but something about that whole aesthetic really connects with me. Lots of artists are doing it....Rihanna when she played Diamonds on SNL, Azealia Banks' video for Atlantis, MGMT's video for Time to Pretend, Santigold's video for Loud Mouth, and then there's MIA's artwork and videos...which are heavily in that style...and pretty much came first. I don’t get how no one got that she’s talking about people being fake on social media which is why the video looks like that. Idk If some of you remember MySpace but the MySpace page covers looked like that and people used to decorate their photos the same way.
