You been coppin' mine but
Can I have a good time at your's tonight
Cause every time we try to get close
There is always something that I'm thinking about

You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not

A knock at the door
Then we hit the floor
And all I know is that you leave me wanting more
I don't let it show
But I think you know
Cause you're tweeting me like Tweety Bird on your iPhone

(You want me)
XXXO
XXXO
(You want me)
XXXO
XXXO
(You want me)
XXXO
XXXO
(You want me)

You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not
You wanna me be
Somebody who I'm really not

Overall Meaning

The song "XXXO" by M.I.A. is about a complicated relationship where the singer wants to have a good time with her partner but finds it difficult due to her own insecurities and the pressure to conform to her partner's expectations. In the first verse, the singer requests to have a good time at her partner's place but acknowledges that there is always something holding her back. The chorus features the repeated phrase "XXXO," which is a play on the commonly used phrase "hugs and kisses," but with an emphasis on "X" meaning "no" and "O" meaning "yes." This reflects the singer's confusion and mixed feelings about the relationship.

The second verse talks about the pressure the singer feels to be someone she's not in order to please her partner, an issue that is further explored in the repetition of the line "You wanna me be somebody who I'm really not." The chorus is repeated once again before the song moves into the bridge, where the singer discusses the ways in which technology (represented by the line "tweeting me like Tweety Bird on your iPhone") complicates modern relationships.

The final chorus sees the singer once again acknowledging the pressure she feels to be someone different, but the final line ("You want me") suggests that despite everything, the singer's partner still wants her, even if it means encouraging her to be someone she's not.

Really showing my age here but the first time I ever saw M.I.A play live was one of her first shows ever as an artist professionally.

She came to my university in England with Santigold as her opening act. A crowd was there to watch her sing Galang.

She really blew my mind then and she still does to this day. Just love her so much - she's so unique and futuristic.

The big label set up doesn't work for M.I.A and because she won't get naked and take off her clothes, she can't be this huge star in this nudity obsessed world. Adore her for sticking to her guns.

Go Maya!

Can we talk about how this sounds and looks like it could be a PC music song made this year? MIA definitely doesn’t get enough credit for how ahead of her time and influential she was for both pop music and pop culture

She's a woman of color. Sadly, women of color's achievements and talents are not supported or given the praise they deserve. #WhiteMalePatriarchySucks

It's funny because nobody understood this video when it came out back in 2010.
It was really ahead of its time.
