Turn Out The Lights
M.I.K.E. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You probably had a long day
I've got the butterflies
I'm not sure what to say
If I could hold your hand
I think that'd go away
Wait to turn out the lights
Did you light those candles
That you like in our room?
I know that summer's coming
Are the lilies starting to bloom?
I check my watch
It must be late for you
Wait to turn out the lights
I'm coming home
Hold on tight
To lullabies for now
Another night
Another lonely town
The sunset's lost
Somewhere behind the clouds
Wait to turn out the lights
I'm coming home
Maybe we
Can meet up where the road ends
Listen to
That old tape of "Blowin' in the Wind"
My watch stopped ticking
Maybe we can pretend
Wait to turn out the lights
M.I.K.E.'s song Turn Out The Lights has a deeply emotional and intimate quality to it, as the lyrics convey a longing for connection with someone significant in the singer's life. The song begins with the singer acknowledging the lateness of the hour and the weariness that often comes with a long day. They express their nervousness through the metaphor of having butterflies and not knowing what to say, which implies a level of vulnerability and uncertainty in their relationship. However, the singer seems to find comfort in the idea of holding the other person's hand, which they believe would allay their fears.
Throughout the song, the singer's lyrics create a vivid picture of someone traveling home after a long journey, longing to be reunited with someone special. They inquire about the candles the other person likes to light in their room, suggesting an intimate knowledge of their partner's preferences. The imagery of looking for signs of summer, such as the blooming of lilies, further emphasizes the longing and the eagerness to connect.
The chorus of the song reinforces the theme of the singer's eagerness to be reunited with their loved one, and the verses paint a picture of the couple's life together. The line "Hold on tight to lullabies for now" evokes a sense of peace and quiet intimacy, and the image of the sunset being lost behind the clouds emphasizes the longing and uncertainty present in the singer's emotions.
Overall, Turn Out The Lights is a song that speaks to the longing for love, connection, and intimacy that is so often present in human relationships. The lyrics use images of travel and homecoming to convey the singer's eagerness to be reunited with their loved one, while also exploring their feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty in the relationship.
