The Dark
M. Elizabeth Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the dark with conspiracies
Screw the industry
I see hypocrisy
Catching felony's
But it ain't me
I make melody's
I know talk is cheap
Used to be on knees
Now I'm on my feet
I see envy in the dark
With that witch craft
I see witch tats
I see bitch bats
I see bitch rats
I see slimey slats
I got hella backs
I got hella knacks
Screw the industry
Ain't no stopping me
I see jealousy
I saw only me, in the dark
With conspiracies
Screw the industry
It's hypocrisy
In the dark
With conspiracies
I see witch tats
I see bitch bats
I see bitch rats
I see slimey slats
I got hella backs
I got hella knacks
Screw the industry
Ain't no stopping me
I see jealousy
I saw only me, in the dark, in the dark
With conspiracies
Screw the industry
It's hypocrisy
It's hypocrisy
I make Melodys
I know talk is cheap

Used to be on knees
Now I'm on my feet

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of M. Elizabeth Fisher's song, The Dark, are quite enigmatic and can be interpreted in many ways. It seems that the singer is addressing someone from the past, perhaps a lover or a friend, who is no longer present in their life. The first line, "Oh where are you now?" sets the tone of longing and nostalgia. The mention of the pussy willow that smiled on the singer's sleeve adds a touch of innocence and tenderness to the song. This image is followed by a promise of a stone from the other person's heart, suggesting a deep and intimate connection between the two.

As the song progresses, it becomes more emotional and urgent. The singer is "half the way down, treading the sand" and "strumming the sand," indicating a sense of being lost and disoriented. The repetition of the plea, "Please lift a hand, I'm only a person," reinforces the singer's vulnerability and need for help. The image of the "Eskimo chain" that "tattered my brain all the way" is particularly striking, suggesting a powerful and overwhelming experience that has left the singer reeling.

The final line of the song, "Won't you miss me? Why don't you miss me at all?" is both poignant and desperate. It seems that the singer is asking for validation and recognition from the absent person, as if their very existence depends on it.

Overall, The Dark is a haunting and evocative song that leaves the listener with more questions than answers. Its mysterious and dreamlike quality invites numerous interpretations and emotions.

My mother NEVER made sex out to be "gross" or a topic that wasn't approachable. Consent was a massive word in our household and from a small child I knew the difference between consent and nonconsensual... I knew I could go to my mom, and still do even at 29 lol, about absolutely anything and not be judged or lied to and so I am now taking the same approach with my daughters... why ppl are so afraid of educating their kids about sex has never made sense to me... the whole "if they know they'll do it" excuse is pathetic... it's like saying "eh we won't tell our kids about cancer that way they won't get it" smh...

Poignant! Thanks for shedding light on the sex trafficking crisis...

1/3 is so high I am in tears! the fact that it's under reported most likely makes me sick!!!

@JPrice02

The 1 out of 5 is a statistic that is believed to be under reported. I can tell you that it is most likely WAY under reported. How I can tell you this is I am a survivor. My birth father was my abuser & trafficker. I was extremely young when this happened. I was not a runaway, rather I was pimped out by the man who should have been my greatest protector.

John Price I'm so so sorry. God bless your soul. My dream and passion is to work with children who are in the situation you were in. I promise you I will do my best to put a stop to this.

I love how she says most importantly: put me out of business.
This shows she cares so much that she wants to be put of business. This is amazing. I wish big pharmaceutical companies would behave the same way. They could instead sell natural products of nature. Just imagine how much further we would advance if everyone went to college for something like research just so we can learn how to do things, and find more cures and plans for the future!

The 'thumbs down' are traffickers.
