Matthew has a better life in high school, being closer with his friends and having a girlfriend. However, after two months with his girlfriend, he is not happy anymore and has become sad, sleeping in the basement. He adores her, but after they break up, he blames her for all the shit happening, even though half of it was his fault. He can’t even go to school without feeling depressed and his grades are slipping. This is another instance of his sweet misery.

Matthew's life improves, but he still has issues. His friend/brother leaves and he cuts himself. He is stressed and cannot believe he isn’t going through depression again. He is facing harassment from old friends and everything seems to backfire at him. Somewhere along the way, he comes to the realization that he needs to apologize to people he’s wronged before, and that he was being evil. He ends the song with the chorus indicating that, regardless of his improved life, he still suffers from sweet misery.
