Ghosts
M. Shinoda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She said
This is not about a poltergeist
Not about a phantom that glows at night
But there are things we don't know and I
Don't have another choice but an open mind, oh
And I know what they'll say
I'm trying to make sense of what no one can explain
But I've been having dreams that after I'm awake
Play out in reality the very next day

So I play along
I nod my head when they say I'm wrong
But each night falls and away I run
On the other side till the daylight comes
So I play along
I nod my head when they say I'm wrong
But each night falls and away I run
On the other side till the daylight comes

And when the lights go down
I see things I can't explain
Calling out my name
The lights go down
Holding every memory close
Tonight is for our ghosts
Ghosts
Ghosts
Tonight is for our ghosts

This is not about you and me
I can't bring back how it used to be
And I know what I do believe
But I've already seen what I couldn't see, oh

So I play along
I nod my head when they say I'm wrong
But each night falls and away I run
On the other side till the daylight comes

And when the lights go down
I see things I can't explain
Calling out my name
The lights go down
Holding every memory close
Tonight is for our ghosts

And when the lights go down
Is there something in the air
There but never there
The lights go down
Holding every memory close
Tonight is for our ghosts
Ghosts
Ghosts
Tonight is for our ghosts
Ghosts

Ghosts
Tonight is for our ghosts

Overall Meaning

In "Ghosts," M. Shinoda sings about his experiences with the supernatural, specifically the idea that ghosts and unexplainable phenomena exist. The song is based on Shinoda's conversation with someone who explains that paranormal activity isn't always about the typical "poltergeist" or "phantom." While many people dismiss such experiences as simply dreamt or imagined, Shinoda insists that he has had dreams that have later become real events.

Despite this knowledge, Shinoda feels he has to play along when people criticize his beliefs, nodding his head when they say he is wrong. However, he is also aware that when the lights go down, he sees things he can't explain, hearing strange voices that call out his name. In the end, the song seems to suggest that perhaps there are some things in life that we cannot fully understand, and that we should let ourselves remain open to the mysteries and the supernatural.

In conclusion, M. Shinoda's "Ghosts" offers a nuanced look at the paranormal, blending both personal experiences and a meditative, reflective atmosphere. The song's dreamy instrumental and Shinoda's soothing voice help transport the listener to a realm that is mysterious and ethereal, yet also hauntingly familiar.

Mike. I just want to say you are such a big inspiration to me. When Chester passed away I felt like the ground started crumbling from underneath me. I still find it hard te cope with that loss. I can only imagine what you must've felt like. But somehow, someway you manage to turn it around and keep creative, and keep making music. And that is just, fucking powerfull man.

I think I speak for all the fans when I say that your music has helped us cope. You have been a bright beacon of light this past year, for everyone around you, and everyone around the world who was hurting with you. And I just wanted to say how fucking gratefull I am for that.

Everyone would've had sympathy with you and the other guys, should you have retreated for a year, or two years or even longer, without reaching out. I mean you lost your bandmate, your vocalist, your best fucking friend.

But no, you opened yourself up to us. And you took us in, and helped us process the grief. And that is not just proof that you are a great musician, but also a great man. You didn't leave us in the dark. So we will never leave you in the dark, or the other guys for that matter.

Thank you.
