Gonzalez and Fromageau parted ways shortly after touring their second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez records primarily on his own, with other artists as guest musicians. The band is signed to Mute Records and found international success in 2011 with the single "Midnight City". Their most recent album Fantasy was released on 17 March 2023.
Anthony Gerard Gonzalez (born March 13, 1980) grew up in Antibes, France together with his brother Yann. His family had a great interest in football and Gonzalez had trials with AS Cannes, while his maternal grandfather is the French international Laurent Robuschi. At the age of 14 he got injured and turned to music instead after his parents bought him a guitar. Gonzalez developed his interest in music and American culture while at secondary school. Together with Fromageau he formed a post-rock outfit called My Violent Wish.
At the age of 17, Gonzalez bought a synth to record a demo, which he sent to a number of French labels. When the Paris-based Gooom Records appeared interested, he recruited Fromageau to "help me because I didn't feel like I had the shoulders to carry the project on my own". The band is named after the galaxy of the same name.
The band's musical aesthetic is characterized by extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instruments. Gonzalez has been inspired by aspects of the American Dream and his songs have been outlined as themed around "adult-scripted teen dreams". Inspiration for the 1980s style found in much of Gonzalez’s music includes bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd, and Tangerine Dream. Between various electronic music properties and album artwork, M83’s style includes a mix of both contemporary pop and 1980s dream pop.

[Accueil - instrumental - synthétiseur]
(Verset 1)
In M83’s “A La Lumière Des Diamants,” the lyrics present a vivid exploration of the interplay between urban life and personal journey. The imagery of city lights serves as a focal point that contrasts the grandeur of the cosmos with the intimate and chaotic experiences found in urban landscapes. The opening lines establish a striking contrast between the bright, artificial lights of the city and the seemingly insignificant stars overhead. This dichotomy suggests that human creations and experiences can often feel more immediate and compelling than the vastness of the universe, highlighting a profound connection to our surroundings that often overshadows celestial wonders. The vibrant lights symbolize hope, energy, and the vibrancy of life, suggesting that in the midst of darkness, whether literal or metaphorical, there is always something that shines brightly, guiding us through.
The refrain of the song reinforces this notion of illumination amidst struggle. It acknowledges the challenges of fear and hardship that accompany the human experience yet emphasizes how the city lights serve as beacons of hope. The act of navigating through darkness is beautifully encapsulated in the lines describing how the lights illuminate the way, transforming the city into a spectacle that invites individuals to persevere. This reframing of fear and struggle—transforming them into a shared experience illuminated by city lights—creates a feeling of camaraderie and resilience. The repetition of the refrain amplifies its significance, suggesting that the power of these lights is not just physical illumination but also metaphoric, granting solace and direction during turbulent times.
As the song progresses into the second verse, the beautiful juxtaposition of the growing shadows and the persistent glow of the city lights unveils a sense of change and evolution. The moon's presence represents the natural world's calm and steady rhythm, while the city lights symbolize progress and the dynamism of life. There is an acknowledgment of personal transformation, articulated through the line that speaks of feeling change with every step. This idea of moving forward while still connected to the hope represented by the urban glow encapsulates the tension between fear of the unknown and the promise that each new day brings. The persistence of the city lights stands as a metaphor for unwavering support during transitional moments—a reminder that change is a part of life, but it can also lead to growth and new beginnings.
In the concluding segments, the imagery shifts to one of arrival and solace, as the singer finds themselves “in the light of the dawn.” Here, the lights transform from mere guiding forces to a place of belonging—a homecoming triggered by the city’s luminescence. The connection to the song becomes deeply personal, as the lyrics communicate a yearning to return to a place that embodies both safety and familiarity. This longing suggests that the journey through struggle has led to a deeper understanding of one’s place in the world. In this sense, “A La Lumière Des Diamants” is not only a celebration of the city but also a poetic meditation on resilience, exploration, and the profound effects of light—both literal and metaphorical—on the human experience.
