The band's primary member is vocalist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Anthony Gonzalez. The band was initially formed as a duo also with Nicolas Fromageau; it has released eight albums and three soundtracks, including the Grammy Award-nominated Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.

Gonzalez and Fromageau parted ways shortly after touring their second album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. Gonzalez records primarily on his own, with other artists as guest musicians. The band is signed to Mute Records and found international success in 2011 with the single "Midnight City". Their most recent album Fantasy was released on 17 March 2023.

Anthony Gerard Gonzalez (born March 13, 1980) grew up in Antibes, France together with his brother Yann. His family had a great interest in football and Gonzalez had trials with AS Cannes, while his maternal grandfather is the French international Laurent Robuschi. At the age of 14 he got injured and turned to music instead after his parents bought him a guitar. Gonzalez developed his interest in music and American culture while at secondary school. Together with Fromageau he formed a post-rock outfit called My Violent Wish.

At the age of 17, Gonzalez bought a synth to record a demo, which he sent to a number of French labels. When the Paris-based Gooom Records appeared interested, he recruited Fromageau to "help me because I didn't feel like I had the shoulders to carry the project on my own". The band is named after the galaxy of the same name.

The band's musical aesthetic is characterized by extensive use of reverb effects and lyrics spoken softly over loud instruments. Gonzalez has been inspired by aspects of the American Dream and his songs have been outlined as themed around "adult-scripted teen dreams". Inspiration for the 1980s style found in much of Gonzalez’s music includes bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd, and Tangerine Dream. Between various electronic music properties and album artwork, M83’s style includes a mix of both contemporary pop and 1980s dream pop.

Saturdays Youth is a special album. Ive been listening to it every October since its release. But only in October. Its the epitome if an "autumn sounding album" for me.
Every year it gets better, mote nostalgia, more anticipation to hear it again, more took out of it every listen.

Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun is my second favorite song of all time. That was the song that made me realize just how emotionally powerful music can be. I absolutely broke down in tears the first time I heard it. Probably the most fitting song title ever too. That’s the last song I want to listen to before I leave this earth.

I didn't like DSVII when it came out, but one night while doing astrophotography I wanted a more calm album to listen to and I chose that to listen too, and damn! Sitting under the stars listening to Colonies, Mirage, or Temple of Sorrow made this one of my all time favorite albums.

Awesome video! Agreed with all of your choices except for Digital Shades Volume 1, which I would've put in A maybe for Colouring the Void alone. I think Saturdays = Youth, Hurry Up We're Dreaming or Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts would be my favourite.

Greetings from Germany, i must say, i love the Music from M83, but it is not so easy for me to say which Album is my favourite. Before the Dawn heals us, was my first M83 Album that i buy and the Album is absolutely fantastic. I love all Kinds of melodic, electronic Music and also Dark Wave and Indie Pop / Rock Music with electronic Influences. I have Music Tipps for you, Blutengel is a great Darkwave Act from Germany, VNV Nation, Mental Minority, Royksopp, Trst is a great Act from Canada, Schiller, Mr Kitty, Massive Ego, Project Pitchfork and many many more, is great Music for me.

Thank you for watching the video! I agree, it is indeed very difficult to pick my ultimate favorite M83 album as they are all great. Depending on my mood my favorite can change to be honest. I'm curious what tracks you didn't really see as fitting on Saturdays=Youth? I'm really a big fan of Kim & Jessie; We Own The Sky; and Too Late. On Dead Cities...it's Unrecorded; Run Into Flowers; and On a white lake, near a green mountain. On Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, it's Intro; Midnight City; Reunion; Wait; Claudia Lewis; Ok Pal; Outro. I wasn't really a fan of Junk when it came out, it seemed like quite a diversion from his earlier stuff. I might have to go back and listen to it. I stumbled onto the last track, Sunday Night 1987, and really like that track now. I never really got into DSVII, similar to Digital Shades. Overall, I agree with your rankings. I would probably bump Dead Cities down to A, and move the other two that are in A to A+. Although, I will say that I jumped over Before the Dawn Heals Us, so need to listen to that to see where I would rank it. :)

@Molly Sanborn Oh, I totally agree on that track Up. The female voice is odd and the track as a whole feels like a total departure for M83 and doesn't really fit in anywhere in their albums. I probably have listened to that track only a few times, it's a weak track and not all that great.

i think it's mostly the track Up that I'm referencing, not sure if it's the female vocals or what but it just sounds out of place on S=Y in my opinion. Definitely re-listen to Junk! I was the same as you, I didn't really get into it when it came out but hearing it a few years after its release I enjoyed it a lot more.
