OH NO
MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS | Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't do love, don't do friends
I'm only after success
Don't need a relationship
I'll never soften my grip

Don't want cash, don't want card
Want it fast, want it hard
Don't need money, don't need fame
I just want to make a change
I just wanna change, I just wanna change
I just wanna change, I just wanna change
I just wanna
Change!

I know exactly what I want and who I wanna to be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

One track mind, one track heart
If I fail, I'll fall apart
Maybe it is all a test
'Cause I feel like I'm the worst, so I always act like I'm the best

If you are not very careful
Your possessions will possess you
TV taught me how to feel
Now real life has no appeal
It has no appeal, it has no appeal
It has no appeal, it has no appeal
It has no appeal!

I know exactly what I want and who I wanna to be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

I know exactly what I want and who I wanna to be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

I'm gonna live, I'm gonna fly
I'm gonna fail, I'm gonna die
I'm gonna live, I'm gonna fly
I'm gonna fail, gonna da-da-da-da-die

I know exactly what I want and who I wanna be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

I know exactly what I want and who I wanna be
I know exactly why I walk and talk like a machine
I'm now becoming my own self-fulfilled prophecy
Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

Oh, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh!

Overall Meaning

In "Oh No," Marina expresses her determination to succeed in life without allowing herself to be influenced by the typical distractions that hinder a person's journey to success. She emphasizes that she doesn't need the typical relationships, material goods, or fame to attain success, and her focus lies purely in making a difference in the world. Marina’s lyrics indicate that she values self-actualization over union and materialistic ownership, proclaiming that she will "never soften my grip."

Marina also highlights how the consumption of media has influenced her perception of life by claiming that "TV taught me how to feel, now real life has no appeal." She acknowledges the negative aspects of media's impact and how it can possess and control a person's life if they are not careful. Marina dives into her psyche to demonstrate how she is self-aware of her actions, motivations, and desires, stating, "I know exactly what I want and who I want to be." The song implies that Marina's self-confidence and resolute behavior make her a self-fulfilled prophecy rather than relying on external validation.

This song is a mood.

I act how people want me to so they dont think I'm trash and throw me out, I know in the future I will never be what I want, but rather what others want me to be and they will tell me who to be without using the words.

@christineboll9478

I feel like this would be good for a movie where a young woman is trying to make it in the acting industry, and she's super arrogant and self-absorbed and she cut off any chances of having a boyfriend or friends because she thinks they'll slow her down.

"Don't do love, don't do friends"
"I'm only after success"
"Don't need a relationship"
"I'll never soften my grip"
"'Cause I feel like I'm the worst, so I always act like I'm the best"

But the reason for this is because she never got enough attention from her parents as a child and thinks if she doesn't make it as an actress, her parents will never love her and she'll give up. She has her heart set on this and doesn't care about anything else.

"One track mind, one track heart"
"If I fail, I'll fall apart"

TV raised her and that's why she chose acting.

"TV taught me how to feel
Now real life has no appeal"

But of course, like in all movies, she falls in love with a guy. By the end, she realizes that life isn't all about success. She lands an acting career in movies, marries the guy, and lives happily ever after.
