The opening line says "Break this, break that, don't break this heart in me," which implies that the singer has been hurt before and is asking the subject of the song not to hurt him again. The singer is lonely and misses the girl, hoping that she will return soon. He further asks her to be his lover and describes his heart as a "raggamuffin heart," which means it’s rough and ready.
