The band's music and lyrical imagery are likely influenced by the liberal Taisho and early Showa era, a period of significant artistic and musical movement when Japan shifted further towards Western concepts, and industrialization brought jazz and blues to Japanese culture. Similarly, MERRY fuse the these genres with rock music to create a "modern avant-garde" sound, or "modern-garde" as their second album is named. Along with cali≠gari, MERRY are also noted for their early "eroguro" (erotic, grotesque) themes.
MERRY was formed in Tokyo, Japan by Gara (ガラ, vocals), Yuu (結生, guitar), Kenichi (健一, guitar), Tetsu (テツ, bass) and Nero (ネロ, drums) in October 2001. Their aggressive performance and melancholic sounds got on the topics. They established an independent record label “GEKIYAKU RECORD” in 2002, and released two studio-albums, a couple of singles, and played numerous shows around Japan.
They signed to Victor Entertainment Inc. in September 2005, and the following year, they started their longest tour, performing nationwide, and played an impressive tour-final show at YOKOHAMA CULTURAL GYMNASIUM on 3rd May 2008. In 2006, they have performed outside of Japan for the first time in their history, and played successfully in München/Germany, Paris/France and Los Angeles/USA.
The band has released four studio-albums, nine singles and three DVD's from Victor Entertainment Inc.
In Europe, they've got signed on Gan-shin Records in 2005, which has released all four studio-albums.
In 2010 they were signed to FREE-WILL Co.,Ltd and management sun-krad. MERRY released their first single "The Cry Against... (same label as Dir en grey) on August 4th.
The band was previously known as メリー but changed their name officially to Merry in 2007. Another name change was done in 2010 when the band was signed to FREE-WILL Co.,Ltd changing the name officially to MERRY uppercased.
MERRY released another single "クライシスモメント" (Crisis Moment) on October 6th, 2010.
On the release day, MERRY announced the title and tracklist for their upcoming single "夜光" (Yakou), which is expected to be released on December 1st.

In "Dekiai no Suiso," the lyrics depict a scene in which the singer, represented by the lyrics "Boku" or "Ore," is observing someone they deeply care about in an aquarium. The imagery of the aquarium serves as a metaphor for their relationship, creating a sense of confinement and separation. The porcelain-like appearance of the person's bones allows them to be seen through, symbolizing a vulnerability and transparency in their emotions.
The chorus, with the repetition of the phrases "Shizuka sugiru yoru dare mo inai heya kansan to shiteru pinkyfish," further emphasizes the quiet and lonely atmosphere, adding a touch of melancholy. The singer admits that they have always found solace in this person, even though they were unable to express it directly. The lyrics "I couldn't even say goodbye, I locked it away in my heart" reveal their struggles and regrets of not being able to convey their true feelings, keeping their emotions hidden.
The concluding lines express a desire for the person to continue watching over the singer, "I want you to keep watching, from there, always... I want you to keep watching, from now on... I want you to keep watching, until you get bored... I want you to keep watching, even after this, my appearance, forever..."
Overall, "Dekiai no Suiso" paints a picture of unrequited love and the longing for a connection that remains unspoken and confined.

In the swimming aquarium, where everything is constantly moving and changing,
I could see through your bones, revealing your true self,
In your playful and lively figure,
I found solace and peace,
In the still and quiet nights, within an empty room,
Where the atmosphere is desolate, like a pinkyfish swimming alone,
I, once again, drowned today,
But always, I was saved by you,
As I watched you through the glass...
Your heart that has stopped beating,
Still keeps pulsating within me...
When I close my eyelids, I can recall
The you who was on the table,
Even the unsaid goodbye,
I lock it away deep in my heart,
During the crying night, I silently swim like you...
Again today, there is a sound that is too quiet,
In an empty room where no one is present,
Where the atmosphere is desolate, like a pinkyfish swimming alone,
I want you to keep watching,
Always, from there...
I want you to keep watching,
From now on, forever...
I want you to keep watching,
Until we get tired of it, always...
I want you to keep watching,
My appearance, even in the future...
