Always
MGMT Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a place I'd like to go somewhere out west,
It's not specific, and the pictures show it best.
I know there's trees I know there's sand and I know there's grass,
I know it's somewhere in the past.
There's a girl out there who's lookin for it too,
She's not sure when she'll go or exactly what she'll do.
If I am doomed am I the first on or the last?
Am I just someone from the past?

No one has to hear, the sound of people laughing at their fear, and the ocean and sun are always there, to make you happy if you're feeling scared of the darkness.

If I ever saw a ghost it'd change the way I think.
I wouldn't gasp for air if ever I did sink.
I wouldn't struggle, I'd just let it all out fast,
And then start living in the past.

If we hold the hand that rapes the hand,
And everyone can feel the hand,
And nothing's gonna change,
It could be the time we're living in,

We'll never feel so safe again,
But love always remains

Overall Meaning

In "Love Always Remains," MGMT's Andrew VanWyngarden sings about a place he wants to go to but doesn't have a specific destination in mind. He describes the landscape in his mind's eye, with trees, sand, and grass - all elements that could signify a place of solitude and escape from reality. He also acknowledges that he is not the only one hoping to find this place, as there is a girl out there also searching for it. VanWyngarden wonders if he is the first or the last to be doomed to search for this place, questioning his place in the past and present.

The chorus of "Love Always Remains" offers a soothing reassurance that is meant to quell the listener's fears of the dark unknown. The sound of people laughing at their fear is not something that anyone has to hear, and the ocean and the sun are always there to lift their spirits. VanWyngarden then muses about encountering a ghost, remarking that it would change the way he thinks. However, he seems to accept it, and states that he would not struggle and would just let it all out fast, and then start living in the past.

Overall, "Love Always Remains" is a song about escape, the search for meaning, and the inevitability of change. Whether it is a physical place or a psychological state, the search for something better is always ongoing. Even if we cannot find it, love always remains.

"If I ever saw a ghost, it'd change the way I think. I wouldn't gasp for air if ever I did sink. I wouldn't struggle. I'd just let it out all fast, and then start living in the past" I can't even begin to describe how much I love those lyrics.

@sweaq123

I only heard it for the first time like a year ago and it's already nostalgic. I think that if I had heard it when it came out, me being in high school, I'd almost cry listening to it now.

I'll never forget all those late nights and long drives, listening to this ep, when my ex wife and I first started dating.... It was so long ago, but I can close my eyes and listen to this song and I can feel that way again, at least for a moment....
