After starting his own label Prolific Recordings, Cole produced a song called "Sincere" in 1998 with a sampler and an Amiga. One of the twenty test pressings of "Sincere" was received by Pete Tong, who started playing the tune on his national BBC radio 1 show. Cole then signed on Gilles Peterson's Talkin' Loud label, where he recorded "Sincere", the album. The Mercury Music Prize nominated (2000) debut won him the accolade of Best Producer from the prestigious Muzik and Mobo magazine awards, sold over 60,000 copies in the UK alone and spawned two outstanding Top 15 singles.
He released a second long player "Cut to the chase" (2003) and he has collaborated on and remixed works by Jill Scott, Tom Jones and Mariah Carey.

Just look what he's done for me
My eyes are on you

Be sincere
The lyrics of MJ Cole's song "Sincere" are open to interpretation, but one possible meaning is that the singer is feeling overwhelmed with intense emotions and desires towards a certain person, urging them to be honest and sincere in their mutual interactions. The chorus repeats the phrase "Don't do it, be sincere," emphasizing the importance of honesty and authenticity in building a relationship. The line "Just look what he's done for me" may refer to a previous experience of feeling blindsided or betrayed by someone, leading the singer to prioritize sincerity in their new connection.
The singer also expresses a physical attraction, with the repeated phrase "Caress me, I want you tonight" suggesting a desire for intimacy with the other person. However, the song doesn't solely focus on physical attraction but also on the importance of honesty and sincerity, pleading with the other person to reciprocate those values. The repeated line "Love tonight, be sincere" brings together the two themes of desire and authenticity, implying that true love can only be achieved when both parties communicate openly and honestly with each other.
