In 1994 and 1995 they won the Brit Award for Best British Dance Act. In 1994, they won the Mercury Music Prize for the album Elegant Slumming. The victory sparked controversy as they beat Britpop band Blur, who were deemed by critics to be more 'worthy' than a mere dance band. With ten Top Ten UK singles, the band was one of the most consistent hit-makers of the 90s, and the album Bizarre Fruit stayed in the UK charts for two years.
In the United States, their biggest success was on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, where they achieved five Top 5 singles, four of which hit number one.
With the closure by BMG of the deConstruction dance record label in the late 1990s, M People gained their own record label called M People Records to release their 1997 album Fresco.
After the release of The Best of M People in 1998, the band took a long break. Heather Small recorded a solo album and it seemed that the band had split, although a repackaged greatest hits album was released in 2005 and the band also embarked on a short tour of the UK. Small continued to pursue a solo career, as her song Proud was the soundtrack to the successful London 2012 Olympic Bid.

Dreaming
M People Lyrics

(Dreaming)
(Dreaming) woah, oh yeah
(Dreaming) mmm
(Dreaming)
(Dreaming) mmm
(Dreaming)
(Dreaming)
I close my eyes and see
A vision of what used to be
Such beauty
Undress me to the bone
Scatter seeds among the stones
Can't you see?
Imagine brown eyes, love and wonder, mmm
That's what keeps me from going under, ooh
Imagine passing through your shadow
A fly-by angel at your window, yes, indeed
Ooh, oh yeah
Am I dreaming again?
Dreaming of when
I thought you were heaven sent
But I wonder
Dreaming again
Dreaming of when
I thought love was innocent
But I wonder
Walking through empty streets
Gazing at your history
So blue, yeah
Deep in the heart of me
I just can't shake the memories
It's you, yeah
Imagine walking on the water, ooh
The past keeps coming back to haunt you, yes indeed
Ooh, oh yeah
Am I dreaming again?
Dreaming of when
I thought you were heaven sent
But I wonder
Dreaming again
Dreaming of when
I thought love was innocent
But I wonder
Dreaming again
Dreaming of when
I thought you were heaven sent
But I wonder
Dreaming again
Dreaming of when
I thought love was innocent
But I wonder
I have a dream (mmm mmm)
Do you have a dream?
(Oh yeah)
I have a dream
Dreaming of me
Dreaming of you
Dreaming of me
Dreaming of you
Imagine walking on the water, ooh
The past keeps coming back to haunt you, yes indeed
Ooh, oh yeah
Am I dreaming again?
Dreaming of when
I thought you were heaven sent
But I wonder
Dreaming again
M People's Dreaming is a song about revisiting memories of a lost love. The singer muses on moments that they held dear and wonders if they were just a dream or if they ever really happened. The song begins with dreamy repetition of the song's title, creating an ethereal atmosphere that sets the scene for the singer's reminiscences. They then describe a vision they see when they close their eyes: the beauty of what used to be. This theme of revisiting the past is central to the song, as the singer continues to reflect on the memories that they can't shake.
Undressing "to the bone" and scattering "seeds among the stonesโ are metaphors for revealing oneself and being vulnerable to love. The singer implies that their past love had the power to create an abundance in their life. They also reflect on the beauty of "brown eyes" and the "fly-by angel at [their] window," which could represent their lost love's fleeting presence in their life.
Throughout the song, the singer uses vivid imagery to convey their emotions. They describe walking through empty streets and gazing at their history, feeling the weight of the memories they hold. They reflect on memories they have of their love and the innocent image they once held of it.
Overall, Dreaming is a wistful reflection on a past love and the memories that once brought joy. The singer grapples with the idea that their love was all just a dream, and whether they will ever experience such love again.

1 of my fave M People songs. โค So underrated! This was the band's last official single, released in 1999 & reached #13 in the UK. Song taken from the band's 1998 compilation album: The Best Of M People (reached #2 in the UK). ๐โค๐ค๐ผ๐ถ๐ต๐ง๐ฟ
