Monolith
Ma'anish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life, a writhing twitching spasm
A catatonic, stereotypic movement
Of crushing elbows
An endless loop of repetition
Humanity never learns from it's own perdition
An endless loop of repetition
Humanity never learns
From it's own perdition

History repeats itself
For the sins of man are always the same
Always the same
Yet it remains
It never changes
Never ceases with the wars it wages
Chaotic, little beads met with high pressure
Acceleration met with the concrete floor of reality

Fight or flight
Manual over-ride
Hijacking the human brain and soul
Our Hubris and pride
The reins with which we're pulled
The twisting knives driven in our backs

Sitting atop his monolith
A self appointed god
He who has
Distanced himself
From these petty human quarrels

He returns to his source
To his untouched, Unscarred self
Drinking from the waters of the fountain

Realizing the absurd
And crossing the wall
Arriving to the edge with clipped wings
And storming the void
Falling into it's eye

To fall into great depths
And hit the bottom
To soar onto great heights
And touch the heavens

To know and realize which is what
As fall turns to flight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Ma'anish's song Monolith reflect on the cyclical nature of human history, particularly its mistakes and failures. The song starts with a bleak description of life as a "writhing twitching spasm," expressed through the metaphor of a catatonic, stereotypical movement where elbows are crushing. The repetition in the lyrics emphasizes the endless cycle of humanity's mistakes and its inability to learn from them. The chorus notes that history repeats itself, the sins of humanity are always the same, and yet, it remains unchanged.

The second verse draws attention to the more violent aspects of human existence, including wars, chaos, and high-pressure situations. The lyrics speak to the fight or flight response, and the idea that humans are pulled and pushed by external, powerful forces like hubris and pride that can also turn into a twisting knife. The bridge, which talks about "sitting atop his monolith," describes a self-appointed god -- someone who has distanced themselves from human quarrels and worldly concerns by returning to their source and their 'untouched, unscarred self. The last verse speaks to the need to fall in great depth to hit the bottom and soar to great heights, pushing against boundaries and soaring to new heights with knowledge and understanding.
