Stop And Smell The Roses
Mac Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Mister
Where you going in such a hurry
Don't you think it's time you realized
There's a whole lot more to life than work and worry
The sweetest things in life are free
And there right before your eyes

You got to Stop and Smell the roses
You've got to count your many blessings everyday
You're gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road
If you don't Stop and Smell the roses along the way

Before you went to work this morning in the city
Did you spent some time with your family
Did you kiss your wife and tell her that she's pretty
Did you take your children to your breast and love them tenderly

You got to Stop and Smell the roses
You've got to count your many blessings everyday
You're gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road
If you don't Stop and Smell the roses along the way

Did you ever take a walk through the forest
Stop and dream a while among the trees
Well you can look up through the leaves right straight to heaven
You can almost hear the voice of God
In each any every breeze

You got to Stop and Smell the Roses
You've got to count your many blessings everyday
You're gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road
If you don't Stop and Smell the Roses along the way

You got to Stop and Smell the roses
You've got to count your many blessings everyday
You're gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road
If you don't Stop and Smell the roses along the way

Overall Meaning

In "Stop And Smell The Roses," Mac Davis is urging people to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures in life. The song is a reminder that there is more to life than just working and worrying. Davis asks listeners if they have taken the time to appreciate their loved ones, to enjoy nature, and to count their blessings.

The refrain "Stop and smell the roses" is a familiar phrase that encourages people to take a moment to relax and enjoy the moment. Davis goes on to emphasize that counting one's blessings is important as it's easy to get caught up in life's struggles and forget about the good things. The line "you're gonna find your way to heaven is a rough and rocky road if you don't stop and smell the roses along the way" suggests that if one doesn't appreciate the journey, they may miss out on important moments that help shape who they are.

Davis's lyrics are a reminder that it's important to take time to appreciate the world around us, to treasure the people we love, and to recognize the good things in life. It's a message that is still relevant today, in a society that often values productivity and efficiency over enjoying the simple things in life.

Start my days with this song every day. Had a patient who knew he only had a few years despite his valiant fight with a returning cancer. His wife saw me later smelling the flower arrangements in the lobby. She told me to always stop to smell the roses. So much, we take life for granted; but we should always take time to do something every day to appreciate the time we have.

That's beautiful.
I can't say I listen to it every day, but I do quite often.
Then when I do, it's the only song I hear in my head every day for weeks.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story.🥰

Doc Severinsen suggested that Mac Davis write a song using the phrase "stop and smell the roses"; and for his suggestion, Davis gave Severinsen co-writer's credit and half the royalties. That's class and kindness and being a top-notch human being. Rest in peace and light, Mr Davis.

When I was in 6th grade, my teacher, recommended this song to the class. This song was on the charts then. Words of wisdom just as pertinent today as then (over 45 years ago). RIP, Mac Davis.
