McCaughan was a founding member of the rock band Superchunk. Formed in 1989, they were one of the bands that helped define the Chapel Hill music scene of the 1990s. Their energetic, high-velocity style and do-it-yourself ethics were influenced by punk rock. The band released a string of full-length albums and compilations throughout the 90’s. After releasing their eighth studio album in 2001, the band went into a period of reduced activity. In 2010, the band released a new studio album Majesty Shredding and followed it up in 2013 with their tenth studio album, I Hate Music.
He also heads the band Portastatic, which began as a lo-fi side project from Superchunk and has blossomed into his main musical project.Prior to this, he was the head of another lo-fi band named Bricks with Andrew Webster of Tsunami, Josh Phillips and Laura Cantrell. Other early bands he played with include Wwax and Slushpuppies.
In the early 1990s he was also the original drummer in the band Seam, which was formed in 1991 with former Bitch Magnet front man Sooyoung Park. He played on their debut album Headsparks and the Kernel EP.
In 2002, McCaughan teamed up with Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices to form the group Go Back Snowball. The duo recorded and released an album in 2002, titled Calling Zero.
Lost Again

I'm driving down your street
I'm kind of looking for you
I'm kind of looking for me
All these houses are split in two
All these hedges are so neat
On a Wednesday afternoon
Lost, lost again
Without you
My friend
Yeah, lost, lost again
Without you
Oh, my friend
And where did I think we'd go
If you saw me and said yes
The pool is already closed
And the park is all a mess
All these houses are split in two
Now the lights are coming on
I slow down but never stop
Wave to the kids out on the lawn
Lost, lost again
Without you
My friend
Lost, lost again
You never saw
My dead ends
Oh lost, lost again
Without you
My friend
Lost, lost again
Without you
My friend
The opening lines of the song "Lost Again" by Mac McCaughan express a sense of alienation and confusion. McCaughan describes the suburban landscape, where "all these houses are split in two" and "all these hedges are so neat." There is a sense of detachment and distance – the singer is driving down a street, but they are not sure what they are looking for. As the song continues, it becomes clear that the singer is lost without a friend.
As the song unfolds, it becomes clear that the "friend" in the song is not present – perhaps they have moved away or passed away. The singer is searching for something – an escape, a connection, a sense of purpose – but they are unable to find it. The metaphor of suburban conformity – the "split" houses and "neat" hedges – reinforces the singer's sense of isolation. The repetition of the phrase "lost again" emphasizes this theme of confusion and disorientation.
The final lines of the song are particularly poignant. The singer wonders where they thought they would go if their friend did not say "yes" to their invitation. The pool is closed, the park is a mess – there is no escape. The children on the lawn provide a bittersweet reminder of the passage of time and the fleeting nature of relationships.
Overall, "Lost Again" is a haunting song that captures the sense of disconnection and longing that many people experience in a society that values conformity over individuality.
