Rather than remaining stagnant and continuing to battle his demons, the Pittsburgh rapper has chosen to move on and accept his successes. He hopes this hasn't hurt anyone's feelings who think he should remain the same Malcolm James McCormick before he found fame as Mac Miller. The rhymer also addresses those who refuse to personally develop telling them "shame on you."
The song was produced by J. Cole with some additional contributions from Los Angeles-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion and British singer-songwriter Dev Hynes, who records under the name of Blood Orange. The track marks Mac's first time collaborating with J. Cole.

Speaking with Beats 1's Zane Lowe about the song Miller explained that Cole sent initially over two beats. They then had a conversation, and arising from that he sent over some tracks one of which became "Hurt Feelings."

Miller added regarding Dev Hynes' contribution that he "was playing this big-ass grand piano, trying to like lay a piano part." The rapper was hating everything he was doing and when Hynes walked in he asked him to give it a try. The first thing the songwriter did was repeat exactly what Miller was doing, which made him think that maybe what he was right in the first place. "And then out of nowhere" he suddenly came up with the piano that you hear on this song.

Hate to bring bad news I got to see him in 2015 first guy in the door and he wouldn’t see anyone after the show which only had 1000 people. He flipped me off from him tour buss after the show because we wanted to see mac. Had to cough up another $40 to get to “meet” him before the show otherwise you’re shit outa luck idk I get it it’s tough having to meet a million people although it had a large effect on my fanship never bought another Mac Miller anything and never gave the guy another royalty I just listen on YouTube where the stream doesn’t count towards the chart. I first discovered Mac when me and my dad had got a loaner vehicle due to our car being in the shop. It was this pick up truck, and it had like 6 burnt cd’s with Mac’s music on it. We asked the guy who owned the truck who he was and he told us he wasn’t well known but he had a concert in town a couple days before we got the truck. Anyways the whole time we had that truck (about 2 days) all we listened to was Mac. Thank you Mac for that memory. I was just listening to your music when my dad reminded me of this. I never really listened to him until after he died, but now I realize that I always would have loved his music if I had only given it the time it deserved. It just helps me remember how precious life is, you never know, tomorrow you may discover a new artist, or you may discover that you like a certain artist's music after all this time. A lot of people call this album a "suicide note".. As a person having the experience of living thru addiction and recovery I feel that his lyrics are more closely representative if someone beginning to enjoy and prefer recovery and sobriety.. there are obvious metaphors related to drugs but there are many, if not more comparisons and lines used that are lessons and feelings a person has only after getting away from drugs, by being able to see life and the world clearly and as it truly is. Not matter Mac's state of mind he truly was such an amazing artist and seemed to be a real, down to earth type person. I wish I wouldve had the opportunity to meet/smoke a blunt with him.. Truly and forever and Idol and strong influencer in my life... RIP Mac. The world loves and misses you dearly
