He was signed to Pittsburgh-based Rostrum Records and released his debut album Blue Slide Park on November 8, 2011, which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 despite being released completely independently. He released five studio albums in his lifetime, which all peaked in the top 5, along with a posthumous album titled "Circles" with help from producer Jon Brion and Miller's family.
In 2013, Miller released his second studio album, "Watching Movies With the Sound Off". The album featured artists such as Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, The Creator, Ab-Soul, and long-time friend ScHoolboy Q. The album took a more personal approach compared to his previous works.
In 2014, Miller released the 24-track mixtape "Faces". Considered by many to be one of his best works, he explores themes of drug use, employing and featuring collaborators of Mac from his previous album, including ScHoolboy Q and Earl Sweatshirt, but also sees new faces such as Rick Ross.
In 2015, Mac released his third studio album, "GO:OD AM", his first with new label Warner Records. The album featured a more energetic and vibrant theme than "Faces" and "Watching Movies With the Sound Off", reflecting a more optimistic, redemptive angle on his personal life, while maintaining elements of his introspective and thought-provoking style from earlier works.
In 2016, Miller released his fourth studio album, titled "The Divine Feminine". He explores themes of love and femininity, largely influenced by his relationship with Ariana Grande at the time and featuring appearances from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Anderson Paak.
In August 2018, following major events in Miller's life, including his breakup with Ariana Grande, with Miller's drug addiction alleged to be a contributing factor, as well as a car crash incident in which McCormick was charged with a DUI, Miller released his fifth and final studio album during his lifetime titled "Swimming". Continuing the dive into his personal life, Miller explores his heartfelt struggles and grief in the past, but remains optimistic for the future. Swimming was nominated for Best Rap Album posthumously at the 2019 Grammy Awards.
Miller had struggled with substance abuse for a long time before his death. On September 7, 2018, he was found dead in his home in Los Angeles, California from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol, only a little over a month after the release of "Swimming". He was only 26 years old. McCormick was buried in his hometown of Pittsburgh. Miller's passing was largely unexpected and had a large impact on the hip-hop community as a whole, with many paying their respects to Miller. On October 31, 2018, a tribute concert, titled "Mac Miller: A Celebration of Life", featured renowned artists and many longtime collaborators of Miller including Travis Scott, ScHoolboy Q, SZA, Chance the Rapper, and Earl Sweatshirt. The concert was a celebration of the late rapper's life and musical achievements, and all profits were donated to the Mac Miller Circles Fund, which provides young people from underprivileged backgrounds with opportunities to explore arts and music.
In January 2020, Miller's posthumous album titled "Circles", worked on in companionship with his album "Swimming", was announced on January 8 along with the single "Good News" and released later that month. Every track on the album was accompanied by a video of the same name, often with psychedelic imagery and images of Mac before his passing and throughout his life. With a more melancholic theme compared to his previous works, the album was well-received by fans and critics alike, renowned for the care placed in continuing Mac's artistic vision.

Motherfucker felt like a grown-up (Soulo)
Momma come and bitch about a curfew
I was still playing round the corner
7 years old saw my first porno
Damn that fucked me up
At 10 I bust my first nut
On this older ho gut, but so whatLet's recap, the earth spinning too rapid
I'm living too fast, sin is a habit
I can't hack fornicate, act as rabid
One bean short of an acid tablet
Security guards spark my cigarettes
The old head go 'head and cop me a brew
Sometimes them Koreans be cool
These shades make me look 22
They say you learn when you get older
I just say that that ain't true
That just means when you was younger
You ain't get turnt up like us fool
Just got L's so I'm riding high
Still in high school but I do
Everything I will do
When I'm 25, no lie
I was young with ambition
Fucked around with these hoes
Never needed permission
Went and lived the life that I chose
Premonition type visions, see the world as it goes
Tell them all what they missing
While I watch as it unfolds
Dodging my death
Confident kid I was trying to grow up with the bestWatching my step
Never know college but could find me nodding off always on test-day
I coulda been a great graduate
Woulda got one of those hoes from the Bachelor
Coulda been smart
Coulda been a doctor
Life full of drama, little soap opera
Falling in love, like she woulda caughtcha
Almost got her knocked up, woulda been a father
All about energy, make good memories
I'm the fucking Dalai Lama
Only 18 but I got my own business
Then I got fame like what the fuck is this
Whole bunch of cameras, fake ass bitches
Everyone around wanna treat me all different
Oh I'm cool? Cause I got money
Back in high school none of the hoes was tryna fuck me
I thought it was a conspiracy
Sometimes my thoughts are scaring me
You a parody, hilarity, that funny shit for the parakeets
They, they, they was looking for somebody like me
Big bag of weed and a money heist scheme
Something brand new, wonder what it might be
Coughing off them drugs, moving at a nice speed
If you 18 years and older
18 years and older
If you 18 years and older
18 years and older
I wanna rule the world, take care of my family, and take care of my girl
Plant a couple seeds, blaze a gang of trees
Want to see a rated R movie about me
They said you must be
18 years and older
In "Matches," Mac Miller (feat. Ab-Soul) delves into his life growing up, from sneaking around as a young kid to discovering pornography at age seven. He goes on to talk about the pressure of growing up too quickly and dealing with sin as a habit. He reflects on how people often say you only learn as you get older, but he believes that's not true; young people can still learn and have fun. Instead, he thinks they just haven't gotten as "turnt up" as his generation yet. He goes on to discuss his struggles with fame, including fake people and conspiracy theories about why no one wanted to date him in high school.
The song kicks off with Mac Miller's childhood memories. When he was young, he felt grown up, and his mother used to give him a curfew. Still, he would sneak out to play with his friends around the corner. He also reflects on some significant events from his childhood, like seeing his first porno at age seven, which affected him deeply. He then admits to losing his virginity to an older girl at age ten. Throughout the song, he admits to being too young to be doing some of the things he's doing, like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol.
The song's chorus, "If you 18 years and older," indicates Mac Miller's desire to be seen as an adult. He wants to have control over his life, take care of his family, and blaze "a gang of trees." He dissects the challenges of growing up, dodging dangers and being forced into the roles society expects of him. All these experiences and reflections from his life come together to create the story he tells in "Matches."
