Poppy
Mac Miller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah
Had to do this one
One time.

Hello Death, it seems that we meet again.
You keep takin friends that I'll never see again.
I guess they gotta leave but if we pretend that they never left,
Well we gon' see em then
Never leave our heart, never leave our thoughts.
As time goes by, they'll never be forgot.
Life goes on, though i wish that they was there.
Shit like this never gonna seem fair, yeahh.
So can i have a moment of silence for anyone who's gone from the coldness of violence.
And I know you wanna see me go to college,
But I'm sorry I don't think that Ima make it.
Because this world is mine for the takin,
So when i get famous they gon' know what your name is.
And no one understand what the pain is,
And how the blood run numb where my veins is.
I'd like to thank you, cuz you made me a man.
Told me to never let it go, so I'm takin a stand.
Always in the crowd when i played in the band.
Your grandson is everything I say that I am.
But maybe I am a little bit over my head,
But I'm feelin so alone tryin to cope with your death.
Holdin my breath, wishin i had one more day.
Wishin' you could be there when I graduate.
Uh, and it's sad to say, that no one in this room understand me.

I know you had to leave, so rest in pease.
But please, can you watch over nanny.
Cuz she loved you, and I love you.
All the prayers I'm sayin may bug you.
But I'm just checkin in on what you up to.
So, how they treatin you up there?
Too stubborn for a cane, way to cool.
Sleepin at your house, walkin me to school.
Thought I was a fool when my grades started slippin.
When I played ball you was always in admission.
You, loved me more than i've been loved before.
And thats the type of thing that everyone ignores.
But not me, you got me.
Always and forever.

Time goes by, goin without you.
Hope you know I've been thinkin about you.
And I know, I know, I know, I know that they took you from your home.
But your in my heart, so I'm never gonna be alone.

Time goes by, goin without you.
Hope you know I've been thinkin about you.
And I know, I know, I know, I know that they took you from your home.
But your in my heart, so I'm never gonna be alone.

Overall Meaning

In "Poppy," Mac Miller explores the theme of loss and mourning, specifically in the death of someone close to him. The song opens with Miller greeting death as a familiar, unwelcome visitor who has taken away friends that he will never see again. He acknowledges the inevitability of death, but also chooses to remember the departed by keeping them in his heart and thoughts. Miller grapples with the unfairness of life and how it can never seem to make sense in the face of tragedy.

The song later reveals that Miller is actually addressing his grandfather, who served as a mentor and a father figure to him. He acknowledges the push his grandfather gave him to be the best he could be, whether it was in playing in a band or pursuing his dreams. In the wake of his grandfather's death, Miller feels alone and overwhelmed, wishing he had more time with him. He pleads with his grandfather to watch over his grandmother, who loved him deeply, and to make sure that he is doing well in the afterlife.

Throughout the song, Miller switches between grief and gratitude, recognizing the profound impact his grandfather had on his life. The song is a powerful tribute to Miller's grandfather and an emotional expression of the pain of losing someone close to you.

I was blessed to see Mac in concert twice. The first time, was right after he released K.I.D.S. and the second, during his Macadelic tour. Like Mac, my grandparents helped raise me. Both of them passed before I could graduate high school, and Macโ€™s musicโ€ฆthis song in particular, helped me so much with my grief. I wrote the lyrics of this song and glued their pictures to my senior night photo.

Iโ€™ll also never forget wearing my mac miller shirt โ€œfor good luckโ€ when taking my learnerโ€™s permit test. I guess it worked, because it was an easy pass.

Mac Miller and his music was always there for me throughout my life, in happy times and in sad times.

Itโ€™s been years now since his passing, and I still miss him. He was truly a light in this world, and he was taken from us too soon. Iโ€™m forever grateful for his music and the time we were able to have with him.

And to his mother, I will always send so much love. My heart will always go out to her. I think she made it to whatever shows she could. She was at his last concert I went to. We all know how much Mac loved his Mama and I have no doubt heโ€™s with her every day, kicking it with nanny and poppy.

Rest in peace Mac. We miss you so much. Thank you for everything. โค๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Man it's crazy how a song can jerk tears. I remember my mom bought me a PSP at a pawnshop when I was in sixth grade and it had your early projects on it. And I've listened to you ever since. You got me through high school mac. I had no friends, everyone picked on me and all I had was mac miller and my playstation on my alone time. GOOD AM saved me from suicide my freshman year when my brother went missing. Your music always cheered me up when I was down or kept me happy when I was up. You were my favorite artist to smoke and study to and still are. It saddens me we will never hear anything new from you again. Thinking how crazy it is. I'm a week from graduating high school and you got me through it mac. Thank You RIP

@youngkidbaby3

@MPGboro
