That's on Me
Mac Miller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, it's all my fault
That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, I know

Time movin' slowly, I'm bouncin' my head off the wall
I know nobody that knows where we're goin' at all
Don't, don't, don't, don't let me down
And I'll pick you up, I'll help you get around

That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, it's all my fault
That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, I know

I'll let it go
I'll cut the strings
Today, I'm fine

I don't know where I've been lately, but I've been alright
I said, "Good morning" this morning and I'll say, "Goodnight"
Don't, don't, don't, don't wait around
We'll take the stairs that gets us into there
It's unfair when I'm bein' too proud, but

That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, it's all my fault

That's on me, that's on me, I know
That's on me, that's on me, I know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mac Miller's song "That's on Me" suggest a sense of responsibility weighed heavily on the singer's shoulders. Refrains of "that's on me, that's on me, I know" speak to the idea of accepting blame and acknowledging failures or mistakes. Miller sings about feeling stuck and unsure of where life is taking him, but ultimately reaffirms his commitment to "pick[ing] you up, help[ing] you get around." He concedes to cutting the strings that may be causing harm and accepting the present ("today, I'm fine").

The repetition of "don't, don't, don't, don't" in the second verse seems to suggest a plea for understanding or patience. Miller acknowledges that he may be prideful and recognizes that this is not always beneficial or fair. Ultimately, however, he takes ownership of his actions and the way they have impacted others.

One interesting aspect of the song is the repetitive structure and emphasis on the refrain of "that's on me." Miller uses this repetition to create a sense of mantra or self-talk, as if he is convincing himself of his own responsibility. Additionally, the use of the phrase "that's on me" has become something of a cultural meme in recent years, popularized by artists such as Post Malone and Travis Scott.

I was afraid to type this out but I'm going to do it anyway.

this song means a lot to me. My childhood went very badly, my mother was very addicted to several drugs and alcohol. Had alot of bad boyfriends, that would hit me and my sister. that meant that I was placed out of home at a very young age. My father wasn't really there at the time either. I have moved from foster homes a total of 11 times. my mother hardly ever spoken to my of my sister and relasped servarel times. I used to think it was my fault that things went so badly, ( That's on me ) I blamed myself. And all the anger I had I took out on myself. It was never great in the foster homes or the fostercare system in general. Suffered multiple traumas. and felt like everyone was leaving me again and again, i got depressed and got diagnosed with bpd.

Now I'm finally 18 and I'm off that. I've been to a clinic so i would got over the past, and this song got me through the clinic. This song is like a farewell to my shitty childhood. That's why I got the number also tattooed on my arm

i want to thank mac so much for the tough times he has been able to keep me going through, his music helps in such a special way for me but also for many others. I hope he flies high and knows how much he means to me.

i"m gratefull for his music <3

I'll always remember the time I met Mac and told him how I was feeling. He was pretty quiet..looked at me and said I feel you hard. I'm sorry if I'm not saying much I just don't wanna let you down and then smiled and smirked I told him his silence and smile spoke volumes and so much comfort. We finished sharing a smoke and laughed. Love you always dude. Most authentic genuine guy

I'm a 57 year old father of grown kids. Not a huge fan of this genre but I can say Mac Miller was a musical master. This song is like an epitaph. So sad because he had great music in him.

This is what I needed thank you man

Mac says thank you. Means so much that you hear music not “rap”. This isn’t a genre. Just like pink Floyd, Johnny cash, Radiohead etc. They are all genre less haha. Too good to cater to just one sound/demographic.
