Someone wrote this about the meaning of this song and I thought it was great insight:
She thought she finally found someone true, and fell in love. The person had many walls built up, she tried to reach through them and show how much she cared. She thinks he is damaged and has a dark perception of the world. He doesn't really show himself.

She realizes she will never really get through to him, he won't let her. He can't really love her back. What she thought was inside of him really isn't there (but she loves him anyway).

She looks to him and sees "nothing" because what she originally saw in him doesn't really exist and that "nothing" has become truth to her.

The "truth" she looks to him to see, is also the depressing realization that she can't look to someone else to make her happy, he taught her this sad truth.

She doesn't normally open up to people easily either, but she offered her heart to him, to be her home. Deep in his mind, he knows, he realizes how much she loved him, but it's too late. His heart is too protected, but he smiles knowing what she has given him.

...and she fades into him, she loved him so much he became everything to her. She looked to him to make her happy, but ended up trying to be everything to make him happy and lost herself.
She begins to see the darkness in him, in herself. She is hurt and depressed and has lost hope, it's like looking in a mirror.

After everything she thinks it is strange he never knew how much she really cared and how sincere she was. She wanted to be the one to make him happy and for him to be the one to make her happy and what could have been. She loved him for what he was but he was too broken to appreciate it or just didn't feel the same way.

I think it's about disappointment, a broken heart and a damaged soul.

Maybe the darkness also becomes part of what makes him so real to her. Accepting truth in disappointment and hurt. He has damaged her, she can't trust her own perception of reality and now she has to build her own walls. She continues to love him from a distance.

Part of her believes she understood him and that he would have loved her if only he really knew and the other part of her knows the sad truth.

I was in 6th grade when this song came out.I was crushing on this girl in my class so hard.We all loved this song so I penned it as sort of a love letter to her and all through that year I held on to out of fear that she didn't share the same feelings.So the next school year it turns out she sat right in front of me!On the second day I finally gave her the letter and we dated all through highschool and into college!!!The long distance didn't work out and we sadly but mutually parted ways and lost touch!!A chance encounter in 2012 brought us into each other's lives again...and after reminiscing about things we have it another shot.Married in november of 2013 and are going strong with twin sons..a beautiful daughter and a wild little baby boy!!!!And it's all thanks to this song!!

My little brother passed away just over a year ago. He lost his battle with depression and addiction. I was born in 77. As a kid from the 90’s I was in 10th grade when this song dropped. I hadn’t heard it in so long that when I finally heard it again it reminded me of this familiar thing I couldn’t explain. Ironically it tugs at my heart strings because I think about the tragic deaths of some of my closest friends. I’ve lost more friends who were like brothers to car accidents and gun shots. Met a small town girl at this boarding school I went to, to change my life. I never found interest in any girls there but for some reason she caught my eye. One morning we were both awake at 6am after a long night of just talking on the phone. It was raining and we went out to sit at a bus stop and she showed me this song. I instantly knew I’d never forget her. I graduated and moved back to the city for college, and she ended up going back home. I miss her and hope she’s doing great. It's called projection. Her Animus Archetype was caste out ward. Her psyche was captured. you really hit it right on the spot i just lost a loved one we grew up together and for various reasons we grew apart but every times we would se each other its was nostalgic remembering all the times we had as kids and now shes gone its hard to cope with this and this song help me shed my tears and remember those memories i will now cherish forever

I broke up with my boyfriend of two years (for someone I met once and fell madly, desperately in love with).
He hated me, then met a true love of his own. A year later he was diagnosed with cancer. He married his girlfriend in the hospital. He died the next year. He was 26.
I am the only one who remembers the two years in the crappy apt. Sleeping on the floor because we couldn't afford a bed, the friends we had over, the cat we rescued, the fun.
The night he died I was living across country in Los Angeles. I woke up and he was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at me. His eyes were glowing, he smiled, kissed me and said, "goodbye".
He vanished and I was sitting there in the dark. I waited till the phone rang in the morning to tell me what I already knew.
No one can tell me it was a dream. I will never forget his beautiful, deep, shining eyes, peaceful and kind, telling me everything was going to be all right.

I'm sure a lot of people don't believe it, but it's true. The person I met once and fell in love with, I married, and he is my husband to this day. My boyfriend died 30 years ago this November.
My husband had met him, and it is always a huge comfort to me, that he understood that I needed to be able to talk freely about his short life and tragic death. I actually went by our old apt. a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't been back in so many years, it was very poignant.
