Same Love
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was in the third grade, I thought that I was gay
'Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight
I told my mom, tears rushing down my face
She's like, "Ben, you've loved girls since before pre-K"
Trippin', yeah, I guess she had a point, didn't she?
Bunch of stereotypes all in my head
I remember doing the math like "Yeah, I'm good at little league"
A pre-conceived idea of what it all meant
For those that like the same sex had the characteristics
The right-wing conservatives think it's a decision
And you can be cured with some treatment and religion
Man-made, rewiring of a pre-disposition
Playing God, aw nah, here we go
America the brave still fears what we don't know
And "God loves all his children" is somehow forgotten
But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five hundred years ago
I don't know

And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm

If I was gay, I would think hip-hop hates me
Have you read the YouTube comments lately?
"Man, that's gay" gets dropped on the daily
We've become so numb to what we're sayin'
Our culture founded from oppression
Yet we don't have acceptance for 'em
Call each other faggots behind the keys of a message board
A word routed in hate, yet our genre still ignores it
And "gay" is synonymous with the lesser
It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion
Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that lead people to walk-outs and sit-ins
It's human rights for everybody, there is no difference
Live on and be yourself
When I was at church, they taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service, those words aren't anointed
That holy water that you soak in has been poisoned
When everyone else is more comfortable remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans that have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same, but that's not important
No freedom 'til we're equal, damn right I support it

I don't know

And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm

We press play, don't press pause, progress, march on
With a veil over our eyes, we turn our back on the cause
'Til the day that my uncles can be united by law
When kids aren't walkin' 'round the hallway
Plagued by pain in their heart
A world so hateful, some would rather die than be who they are
And a certificate on paper isn't gonna solve it all
But it's a damn good place to start
No law's gonna change us, we have to change us
Whatever God you believe in, we come from the same one
Strip away the fear, underneath it's all the same love
About time that we raised up, sing

And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
And I can't change
Even if I tried
Even if I wanted to
My love, my love, my love
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm
She keeps me warm

Love is patient
Love is kind
Love is patient
Love is kind (not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient (not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient (not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays)
Love is patient (not crying on Sundays)
Love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays)

Love is patient
Love is kind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are a powerful commentary on the ongoing issue of discrimination against members of the LGBTQ+ community. The song begins with the artist reflecting on his childhood, when he believed he might be gay, and how he had to overcome stereotypes influenced by conservative society at that time. The song asserts that being gay is not a choice or a sin that can be cured, but is a natural part of human diversity, and should be celebrated and respected. The lyrics touch on how hip-hop culture and the online world perpetuate negativity towards the LGBTQ+ community, leading many to fear expressing their true selves. The chorus, "And I can't change, even if I wanted to, my love, she keeps me warm," emphasizes that love is a basic human right, and it should not matter who its recipient is.

The second verse of the song dives deeper into the larger issue of discrimination, where the songwriters draw attention to how mistreatment based on differences goes beyond just the LGBTQ+ community. The song explains how the same prejudice has fueled conflicts from religious hatred to racism. The artists prompt us to remember that human rights apply to every individual regardless of the color of their skin, religion or their sexual orientation. As the song progresses, the lyrics call for society to be more accepting, more compassionate and to overcome their fears regarding differences. The song ends with a message of freedom and hope that one day, laws will reflect kindness and equality.

My uncle was and I kept my room straight
My uncle is gay, but I made a conscious effort to portray myself as straight, even though I am not.

Trippin', yeah, I guess she had a point, didn't she? A bunch of stereotypes all in my head
I realized that my mother was right, and that I was only believing stereotypes about what it means to be gay.

I remember doing the math like "Yeah, I'm good a little league" A pre-conceived idea of what it all meant For those who like the same sex had the characteristics
Before, I equated liking the same sex to having certain characteristics, but now I realize that there are no set characteristics for gay people.

The right-wing conservatives think its a decision And you can be cured with some treatment and religion Man-made, rewiring of a pre-disposition, playing God
Conservatives believe that being gay is a choice that can be cured with therapy or religion; however, it's not a choice, it's just the way someone is wired, and no one has the right to play God.

Ahh nah, here we go America the brave Still fears what we don't know And God loves all his children it's somehow forgotten But we paraphrase a book written 3,500 hundred years ago
As a country, we are supposed to be brave, but we still fear the things we don't understand, and even though God loves all people, some people forget that and use a book written over 3,500 years ago to justify their hate.

And I can't change Even if I tried Even if I wanted to And I can't change Even if I tried Even if I wanted to My love, my love, my love She keeps me warm She keeps me warm She keeps me warm She keeps me warm
I cannot change who I am, even if I tried. My love for another person is what keeps me warm and happy.

If I was gay I would think hip-hop hates me Have you read the Youtube comments lately "Man that's gay" Gets dropped on the daily We've become so numb to what we're sayin'
If I were gay, I would believe that the hip-hop community hates me because of the negative comments I read on Youtube daily. We've become so accustomed to speaking negatively without realizing the harm we cause.

Our culture founded from oppression Yeah, we don't have acceptance for 'em Call each other faggots behind the keys of a message board A word routed in hate, yet our genre still ignores it
Our culture comes from a place of oppression, yet we still don't accept the LGBTQ+ community. We call people derogatory names like 'faggots' without understanding the severity of our words, and our genre (hip-hop) often ignores these problems.

Gay is synonymous with the lesser It's the same hate that's caused wars from religion Gender to skin color the complexion of your pigment The same fight that lead people to walk-outs and sit-ins It's human rights for everybody There is no difference Live on! And be yourself!
The term 'gay' is often associated with being less of a human, which is the same hate that has led to religious wars, racism, and discrimination. We need to treat human rights as one universal concept and accept everyone for who they are.

When I was in church, they taught me something else If you preach hate at the service Those words aren't anointed And that Holy Water, that you soak in is then poisoned When everyone else Is more comfortable remaining voiceless Rather than fighting for humans, that have had their rights stolen I might not be the same But that's not important No freedom 'til we're equal Damn right I support it
I learned that preaching hate is not what religion is about at church. The water we use in church is supposed to cleanse us, but when we preach hate, we are poisoning ourselves. Too many people choose to remain voiceless rather than fighting for human rights. We must be united and strive for equality for everyone, and I fully support this movement.

We press play Don't press pause Progress, march on! With a veil over our eyes We turn our back on the cause 'Till the day That my uncles can be united by law Their kids are walkin' around the hallway Plagued by pain in their heart A world so hateful, some would rather die than be who they are And a certificate on paper Isn't gonna solve it all, but it's a damn good place to start No law's gonna change us We have to change us, whatever God you believe in We come from the same one Strip away the fear Underneath it's all the same love About time that we raised up
It's time to keep moving forward and not put a pause on the progress we've made. Until the day that gay marriages can be legal, families will continue to suffer from discrimination. A certificate won't solve all of our issues, but it's a good start. We have to change our own beliefs, regardless of religion or fear, as we come from the same one. At our core, we are all the same and must come together for change to occur.

Love is patient, love is kind Love is patient Love is kind (Not crying on Sundays) Love is patient,(Not crying on Sundays) love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays) Love is patient,(Not crying on Sundays) love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays) Love is patient,(Not crying on Sundays) love is kind (I'm not crying on Sundays) Love is patient, love is kind
Love is never in a hurry; it waits patiently. Love is also gentle and kind. Crying or being emotional is not a sign of weakness or less love. Love is still patient and kind even in the roughest of times.

@@1c0nic_player LOVE ALWAYS JUDGE! And RIGHTSEOULSY thereof. LOVE IS RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT.

And BIBLE never banned it:
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Matthew 7:2 - For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

John 15:13 - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

The whole BIBLE is loving, because it RIGHTEOUSLY judging us and calling us all to REPENTANCE.

“God loves all his children is somehow forgotten, but we paraphrase a book written 3500 years ago...” is a great line.

@ItsMe-sv3mp

fantastic to a fool who does not keep god's word remember the city of Sodom goodbye

@Ozzys29

Rob Why do people abide by history books made a few days ago telling us about what happened 3500 years ago but don’t abide by the book made 3500 years ago..

@KobaAM

@@Ozzys29 Because the history book is recent and has sources. The book written long ago is shrouded in the mystery of time and thousands of years of being paraphrased.

@Ozzys29

Rob History books are reworded/rewritten annually lmao. And we are “teaching” this in school to every up coming American

@dylanb0404

Ozzys29 they are rewritten as we find out more information so we can teach our youth to the fullest extent we know. The Bible has not been changed since the New Testament which shows that there is no fact checking or viable research to be added.
