Macy Gray was originally hesitant to record a studio album due to what is, arguably, her most recognizable feature -- her voice. She started her music career as a songwriter. Her first album was actually a mistake; she was at the studio waiting for the person who was supposed to be singing her song, and the producer wanted to hear what one of the songs was supposed to sound like. Once she started singing, the producer liked the rough sound of her voice so much he offered her a record deal.

Well shut your mouth stop all that complaining
About the world and all the suffering
We are so sick of all your opinions
Ain't what you say it's what you do with your guns
Do it like this and we do it like that
Takes more to win than a few good men
Get up get out and do something,
Go do your part start chipping in
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Live for yourself and you will live in vain
You live for others you will live again
You're either enemy or you are the friend
You're talking talking we'll be glad when you're done
Ain't what you say it's what you do with your love
Do it like this and we do it like that
Takes more to win than a few good men
Everybody everybody everybody everybody
Get up get out and do something,
Go do your part start chipping in
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Live for yourself and you will live in vain
You live for others you will live again
You're either enemy or you are the friend
Everybody everybody everybody everybody
Get up get out and do something,
Go do your part start chipping in
Everybody (yeah yeah)
The song "Everybody" by Macy Gray is all about taking action and making a difference in the world. The lyrics encourage listeners to get up and do something for the greater good, rather than just complaining about the state of the world. The opening lines, "Get on the dance floor and shake it with me / Well shut your mouth stop all that complaining" set the tone for the rest of the song. The message seems to be that dancing and having a good time is great, but it's not enough on its own. In order to make a tangible difference in the world, we need to take action and contribute in some way.
