Sexual Revolution
Macy Gray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody shake it
Time to be free amongst yourselves
Your mama told you to be discreet
And keep your freak to yourself
But your mama lied to you all this time
She knows as well as you and I
You've got to express what is taboo in you
And share your freak with the rest of us
Cause it's a beautiful thang
A beautiful thang
A beautiful thang

This is my sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution

Everybody shake it
Time to be free amongst yourselves
Your mama told you to be discreet
And keep your freak to yourself
But your mama lied to you all this time
She knows as well as you and I
You've got to express what is taboo in you
And share your freak with the rest of us
Cause it's a beautiful thang

This is my sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution

Everybody break it
Every rule, every constriction
My papa told me to be home by now
But my party has just begun
Maybe he'll understand
That I got to be
To be the freak that god made me
So many thangs I want to try
Got to do them before I die

This is my sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution

I'm so fuckin' beautiful
Especially when I take my clothes off
I'm so fuckin' beautiful
Especially when I take my clothes off

This is my sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution
Sexual revolution

It's sexual
It's sexual
It's what?
It's sexual
It's what?

It's sexual
Revolution!

Overall Meaning

In Macy Gray's song Sexual Revolution, the artist encourages the listeners to embrace their sexuality and liberate themselves from societal norms and constraints. The song urges individuals to break free from the expectations and limitations imposed on them by their parents and society at large. The lyrics suggest that sexual expression is a beautiful thing and that people should not feel ashamed of their desires and should instead embrace them. The phrase "Your mama lied to you all this time" implies that parents may have influenced their children to suppress their sexuality, leading to feelings of shame and guilt.

The chorus of the song, "This is my sexual revolution," reinforces the idea that sexual liberation is a personal journey, and each individual must go through it at their own pace. The sexual revolution mentioned in the song refers to the significant change in social attitudes towards sexuality that occurred during the 1960s and 1970s. During this time, people began questioning traditional attitudes towards sex, and more liberal views towards sexual expression and experimentation emerged.

Overall, the song Sexual Revolution encourages listeners to explore and embrace their sexuality, and to break free from societal norms and expectations. It suggests that sexual expression is a beautiful thing that should be celebrated and not shamed or repressed.

I first heard this song after high school and it made me understand that it's fun to be free and enjoy sexuality. That's what it's for. Be free, people! <3

SuperAlias11

Still one of the most liberating songs out there.

Maurie Richie

This is one of my favorite songs by Macy Gray. This song should have performed much better and should have received Grammy nominations. I used to think Prince was singing background.

Macy is such a great singer, the song is simply perfect, but when I saw Naomi... My mind exploded!
Naomi couldn't be more perfect, she could have played the entire video herself.
"Deep eyes" OMG! She could freeze the inferno!
Long live the Queen! #QueenNaomi

PS. Who's listening in 2021?

This used to be one of those music videos I was always afraid my mom would walk into while I was watching MTV 💀

Alonso Solórzano

That is indeed Naomi Campbell in the video, just found an article from Vogue from 2001 saying "Naomi Campbell has landed a starring role in the video for Macy Gray's new Sexual Revolution single."

And I don't know why this video didn't get more praise from the huge diversity in it, if this was released by Madonna it would've been a huge hit, or if it was released by someone like Lady Gaga today everyone would praise it for its message, kind of video, and the huge diversity in it. Sites like Huffington Post would be raving about how awesome the diversity and the idea of the video and song are. Macy is truly underrated.

Keizer Hedorah

it was too weird

Many are ahead of the game and also something ain't right in the entertainment industry some of the biggest stars don't sing well live that's fundamental
